Google Maps For Android Updated, Adds Live Events [News]
November 15, 2011 | In: Uncategorized
Google Maps for Android recently received a minor update, which is available on the Android market. The most important new feature added in this update is “live events”. The concept is as it sounds. Now, in supported cities, you’ll be able to find events that are happening or will be happening – such as concerts and plays – near your location using Google Maps and your smartphone’s GPS.
For now, like so many new location-specific services, you’ll only be able to find live events in certain cities. The debut includes New York, San Francisco, Paris, Zurich and London. There’s no timeline for the roll-out of new cities, but that’s common practice for Google, a company that frequently chooses not to set deadlines for new features.
The other changes appear to be cosmetic or under-the-hood bug fixes, with one exception. The “Post to Twitter” option for Places reviews has been removed entirely, leading to speculation that it will soon be replaced by a Google+ share button instead.
Users have been able to download the update since 11/11. You’ll need Android 2.1 or better to run this version of the Google Maps app.
