3 Smart Tips to Keep Your PC Secure When Downloading Files Online

secure downloadingEven though it is frowned upon, lots of us download copyrighted content online – legally and otherwise – from questionable sources. Be it may via BitTorrent trackers, Usenet, IRC or file sharing forums, there is no dearth of shady distributors of pirated content online.

Why are so many people willing to offer pirated content to you? To ensure that everyone of us can enjoy over-priced & DRM-ridden copyrighted material? Yes and no. Except for a few, the rest have an ulterior motive for peddling malware & spyware.

Often times software downloaded from these shady sites are tampered with to include backdoors and malware. And in recent times, fake audio and video files in zipped archives which when extracted and played, download spyware in the guise of acquiring codecs.

For the unsuspecting soul who thinks a file downloaded for free is awesome, here is an an opportunity to learn about the digital trapdoors, ways to avoid them and how to verify if it is the real deal before installing so that you can enjoy secure downloading.

Install Proper Tools

Getting an anti-virus is the first line of defense and it is better to get the comprehensive internet security pack complete with a firewall, anti-spyware etc. All of the downloaded files have to be scanned and make sure you have option to scan inside zipped archives turned on by default. Check out some free security tools here.

Secondly, use the most recent version of either Firefox or Chrome. Both the browsers have a fabulous built-in domain name checking engine. If there is a site that hosts & distributes malware, they are blocked and you will be shown a warning.

When you see either one of the following screens, find an alternate URL to download. If you want to be more immune to harmful sites consider installing some Firefox security addons.

secure downloads

secure downloading

Using Internet Explorer (definitely not IE 6) or Opera is alright but lack of security plugins takes them to the bottom of my list.

Find the Right Source

Pirating a copyrighted content is not a gimmick that every Tom, Dick and Harry can do. It needs exclusive access to pre-release material and some ninja reverse-engineering tricks. They are called SCENE groups and there are plenty of iconic names specializing in only one of the verticals (say movies, TV shows, software, games etc.).

Their first point of release would be leading Internet Relay Chat (IRC) channels, Usenet groups and Bittorrent trackers. Pointing you towards those sources is not exactly ethical and hence you should do some searching to find the right source.

secure downloads

For example, if you are looking for a TV show from a popular Bittorrent tracker, find the torrent files with the highest number of seeds and find who uploaded it. Check their track record, how long they have been uploading torrent files and most importantly if they have a verified account there. Checking the comments section of the torrent file also will save you a lot of time and bandwidth.

secure downloads

In the case of forums, find the ones with a lot of members and threads. It’s extremely easy to begin a file sharing forum and distribute malware. Also, make sure to get the links from threads started by moderators or long serving members with a significant number of posts and reputation points.

Verify File Integrity

SCENE groups in almost all cases add a checksum file to check the integrity of the file. Checksum is like a unique digital signature of a file generated using algorithms to indicate that the file is its intended form.

Now if the file is tampered with, the checksums will not match the ones that were originally generated. Even a tiny change like renaming a file will result in the checksum error. Some of the common checksum formats are EXF, MD5, SHA, SFV.

safe downloading tips

To verify the integrity of files using checksum, we will need a free tool like Exactfile. While installing, keep all the checksum formats to be associated checked as it makes it easy to run the verification in just a single click.

Once you have downloaded the file, scan for viruses and extract it. Now, since we have associated all the common checksum file formats to Exactfile, just click on the file with the Exactfile logo (a stylish X) and the file verification will begin.

secure downloading

As you can see, I renamed a file from the same folder and a error is shown after the verification. So you can be confident that the file is in its original form released by the reliable SCENE group and you are good to go.

Final Thoughts

I strongly suggest you to verify file integrity when it comes downloading software from questionable sources. And if you opt to download scripts & server software, I can assure that you will be exposed to serious danger if the files are installed without any verification.

I would not delve into preaching mode by saying that it is illegal & unethical to download pirated files. It’s a judgment call to be made by the individual, however, reckless pirating does hurt the developer/creator ecosystem which is definitely a bad thing. If you like the material you downloaded, fork out a few bucks to support the one who spent a chunk of life creating it in the first place.

Is there a tip you would like to share with the rest of us to escape from malware-ridden content?

Pump: Awesome All-In-One Video Manager & More

video managerIn this era of highly competitive markets, we can spot two general trends among software makers to stay afloat in the sea of similar applications; focusing on only one feature and polishing it well, or throwing in as many features as they can.

The latter option is true of multimedia managers. Most of them can handle all kinds of formats and also comes with a bunch of extra bells and whistles. But even among those all-in-one multimedia suites, the Pump video manager still stands out.

A Video Manager & More

What is Pump? At its very core, it is a Windows-based video manager, an application to manage everything related to video collections, starting from playing, managing, converting, to searching and downloading. It can even subscribe to RSS feeds and download torrents.

If you’d like to try, you can download and install the app. After the installation process is done, you will be greeted with the “First Launch Assistant” which will help you set the application to fit your needs.

video manager

Using this assistant you can import your multimedia collections (audio and video) including the ones from your iTunes Library. You can also install additional components needed to play and convert multimedia files. In my installation, since I already had VLC and Quicktime components, I only had to install the Lame component to be able to convert CDs into MP3s.

video manager software

Pump will also modify your firewall settings. Since most Pump features depend on an internet connection, it’s important that Pump has access to the net.

video manager software

The Pump main window is divided into two main parts. On the left are the menus. You can access all of Pump’s activities from this pane, including torrent activities and available external drives.

video manager software

On the right is the main pane where you can monitor individual activities. If you open audio/video files, you can control the playback from there. This main window is also a web browser. So you can enter an URL and browse away directly from Pump.

free video manager

To play an imported video, for example, all you have to do is to click on the Videos option from the left pane and choose the video from the main window.

free video manager

Pump comes with pre-configured RSS feed subscriptions of Rocket Boom and Mininova. But you can easily add your own RSS feeds by clicking on the plus button and type (or paste) the link.

free video manager

It’s been mentioned before that Pump is also a torrent client. If you want to download a torrent, you have to add the torrent from the “File – Import torrents” menu. I’ve tried the feature, and even though it’s not as polished as a veteran torrent client like uTorrent, Pump is good enough.

02e_Import_Torrents.png

If you like video sites like YouTube, you can browse the site directly from the Pump window. And it’s as fully featured as any ordinary browser.

03_Add_To_queue.png

And if there’s a video that you like, you can download it directly using “Download the flash video” link that will appears at the top of the webpage. Please note that this link is not always available.

03b_Download_YouTube.png

A friendly copyright warning will appear before you can download the video. If you want to always be reminded, check the “Show this message again next time” box. Otherwise, the message will appear only once.

03c_Download_Warning.png

Then all you have to do is wait until the video download is finished. Meanwhile, you can continue browsing to find and watch other videos.

video manager

If you have a list of videos that you want to watch, you can do the video search and download the results directly from Pump.

Video_Search.png

Despite some glitches that you can expect from beta stage applications (the current release of Pump at the time of writing is v.0.8), Pump has the potential to be a complete and solid all-in-one multimedia manager.

Have you tried Pump? Or do you have your own favorite multimedia manager? Please share your thoughts and opinions using the comments below.

5 More Websites To Share Videos Privately With Friends & Family

share videosToday’s web is all about open social networking. Even then, some information should ideally remain out of bounds from the public gaze. Most photos and videos are actually private memories and some of us may balk at sharing it with the World Wide Web.

Ryan first addressed the issue in his detailed look at the Top 4 Sites to Share Private Home Movies with Family & Friends. The post looked at the more obvious YouTube and its less intuitive interface; and then the three other online services to share videos.

But video hosting websites which let you have a say on who gets to view the shared videos are sprouting up.

The choice of the right private video sharing website will ultimately boil down to the file size allowed and the ease of sharing with the right kind of privacy features.

So try out the five below and let us in your preference (or none) to share videos with your friends and family.

Gabble

free videos share sites

Gabble is a beta web service from Hewlett Packard which allows you to safely and securely share private videos. Notice the encrypted connection (HTTPS) in your address bar. All you need to get started is an Internet connection, a web browser and a video camera such as a webcam or mobile phone.

Gabble allows you to record and upload your videos for sharing. You also get a unique email address for your account which can be used to send videos directly from your mobile phone. Videos posted via email are limited to 10MB in size. Gabble allows you to create and join groups for exchanging videos.

VidMe

share videos

VidMe is another online video sharing site which places all privacy controls in your hands. Videos can be uploaded or recorded directly using a webcam. Videos uploaded on VidMe can only be sent to the recipients you want to. The videos cannot be downloaded by the recipients or forwarded to anyone else. If recipients want to share the videos with anyone else, they have to ‘suggest an additional recipient’ and get your approval.

VidMe even has an iPhone app for uploading and sharing videos directly from your iPhone. Recipients are notified with an email and they get a little snapshot of the video in the email. To watch the complete video, the recipient will have to sign-in to VidMe.

Also catch our previous mention of VidMe.

Video Sprout

free videos share sites

Video Sprout is as simple as it gets in sharing private videos. Simply upload your video, and share access to it with the people whom you email. The videos can be shared via the unique URLs too. The online video sharing web service allows 100MB of storage and 500 monthly views. It’s a nice solution for sharing those little video clips.

Also catch our previous mention of Video Sprout.

Viddler

free videos share sites

Viddler is a free video sharing service which comes with three privacy controls. By default all videos uploaded are set to private (only you can see it). With the shared setting, the people you select will be able to view it. And thirdly, videos can be made public too and is viewable by others. Viddler is free for personal use.

What’s good about Viddler is that right now the size limit per video is 500MB  (2GB monthly limit) and you can upload as many videos as you want. After an upload, Viddler encodes the files. The free account is ad-supported. If you don’t mind that, you can set it up with friends to mutually share videos.

Mejuba

share videos

Mejuba gives you ‘unmetered’ traffic and unlimited storage or your photos and videos. And the website if completely free to boot. Mejuba allows photo and video uploads from the computer, mobile, and iPhone. Upload size is limited to 1GB per upload and that’s more than enough for a lot of things.

The useful thing (apart from its unlimited USP) is that you can upload entire folders and the folder arrangement gets retained online. Folders are called Albums on Mejuba and can be accessed via the Explorer like interface. Mejuba allows you to create public and private albums. Private albums can be viewed by invitation only. You can share your album with specific contacts and/or your Mejuba contacts.

How do you share your private videos? Let us know the site of your choice.

4 Tips While Using Google Earth Street View

google earth street viewGoogle Earth is a great tool to enhance our knowledge of Earth’s geography and, with Google Earth Street View enabled, it is possible for anyone to have a virtual tour of the destinations they love or plan to visit.

Street View can be enabled in Google Earth by checking the layer of the same name under the Layers section. Once the Street View layer is turned on, geographical locations which have been photographed by the Google Street View vehicles show up in the map marked by little camera icons.

Even though USA and some other nations have been exhaustively covered, Street View is not available for all countries owing to various reasons including privacy and national security. But wherever Street View panoramas are available, you can apply the following tips to get the best out of Google Earth.

Navigation

google earth street search

Left click on the camera icon of a location to bring up the Placemark with details like physical address of that location. You can launch Street View by clicking on the link in the placemark or by double clicking on the camera icon.

google earth street view

Some locations have multiple layers of Google Earth Street View embedded with each layer marking a significant landmark in or around the location. To find locations with layers, just hover the mouse over the location and if you see the Compass symbol, there is more to that place. For example, in the case of Springfield, Illinois, Abraham Lincoln’s Presidential Library is also linked to the Street View icon and clicking on it takes us directly to the venue.

Accessing The Panorama

All the Street View images offer a 360 degree panoramic view of the location. Panoramas cannot be more awesome but it will be quite annoying to see a particular section of the image immediately. Like a puppy chasing its tail, we will have to move left or right to find the spot we are looking for. To avoid this in Google Earth, hover your mouse over the arrows on the top right corner of the Street View.

google earth street search

A rectangular thumbnail view of the Street View is displayed and you can just click on it to view the exact location you want to see without having to go round and round the panorama.

Finding The Distance

google earth street search

By using the Ruler tool, we can find the distance between two Street View locations. Once you select the ruler option, just connect the line between two Street View Icons to view the distance between the two.

Adding Other Layers

google earth street view

From the Layers section, we can add overlays to complement the street view. For example, adding the 3D buildings and weather layers adds 3D models of buildings & weather information to the location. These layers can be viewed by adjusting the transparency slider which sits just above the Layers section.

Final Thoughts

Street View has been implemented in both Google Maps and Google Earth. However, the Google Earth Street View implementation offers a better 3D experience when viewing the surroundings. Users can also add their own placemarks and create paths between places for future reference & travel.

One gripe of mine is that the images are not of very high quality and often are fuzzy & look smudged. Considering the fact that Google Earth is a desktop application, high definition images can be handled without hogging system resources unlike a web browser. Hopefully Google will add images of higher resolutions in the near future.

Google Earth can be a fun application too. Check out how you can use Google Earth to play games, feel the speed of a flight simulator or investigate conspiracy theories.

Do you know of a better Google Earth tip? Please share it with us in the comments below.

How To Create An Image Map Using Paint.NET

I wrote an article about how to create an image for your website with clickable regions or hotspots using GIMP.  This kind of clickable image is called an image map.  Image maps have been around for a while but they are still widely used to give web designers flexibility.

In the comments someone asked me if this was possible to do using Paint.NET (can it be a Photoshop alternative?).  For this reason I set out to not only install and use Paint.NET for the first time, but to figure out how to do image maps using it.

Yes, I did have to leave Ubuntu for a few minutes and boot into my Windows installation (I know there’s an Ubuntu version but I wasn’t sure if everything would work the same) but it was worth the change of pace.

The conclusion I came to was that yes, it is possible but you’ll need the help of a plugin.

Download & Install The Plugin

Plugins are fairly easy to implement in Paint.NET and it basically consists of downloading the files and putting them in the correct folder.  The plugin needed in order to make an image map is called “Create Image Map” and you can download it from this link.  The page is a bit messy so check out the screenshot below to find it easily.

You’ll be downloading a zip file containing the correct files.  Once downloaded, just put them into here: C/Program Files/Paint.NET/Effects

Now just restart Paint.NET and you should have it installed. Open the image and you should be all set.

Use The Image Map Editor To Get The Right Code

Open the image map editor: Effects -> Image Application -> Create Image Map

Drag (pretending you are seeing a box) and name each hotspot.

Click OK when finished.  You will then get a pop-up with some code you will need to grab.

Edit The Code & Get It Ready For Your Site

Open Notepad or a similar text editor and paste the code.  You’ll probably end up with all of the code on one line.  The easiest way is to separate the lines the way I did in the screenshot below.

Notice that I added a line of code at the top.  This line of code specifies where the image is located on the server (you did upload it right?) and the name of the map being used over the image.

You’ll also notice that I named the map.  In order to tie the image to the map, you will need to do that.  Also replace the “#” signs with URLs of the links you want inserted.

So yes, there is another way to make an image map.  It’s also possible to do by hand without the help of an image editing program but who has the time for that?

What do you use to make image maps?

Test Run: First Impressions of Firefox 4 Beta

firefox 4 betaFirefox 4 Beta is now available for Mac, Windows and Linux users. If you want to help Mozilla out and test-drive their latest offering, you can download the beta version and take part in the feedback process. So you probably want to know what’s new in this version before giving it a go. Below is a roundup of the changes they have made to the overall appearance, functionality and a little peek under the hood as well.

You’ll find that the address bar and tabs have a more compact feel to them, taking up less space than they did before, and the navigation buttons are smaller. The changes in Firefox 4’s appearance are subtle, but definitely pleasing. The functionality seems to have improved in comparison to previous versions, but some of the results in Firefox 4 Beta still disappoint in comparison to other browsers.

Tabs on Top

Probably following in the footsteps of Chrome, the tabs are now on top.

firefox 4 beta

This is the default appearance in the Windows version, but in OS X and Linux you have to change it yourself, in the View menu, under toolbars.

firefox 4 beta

Firefox Button (Windows Vista & 7 only)

In Windows Vista and 7, the menu has been replaced with one button at the top of the page, from where you can access all of the previous Firefox menu items. The use of the button complements the more compact redesign, but the appearance of the button itself leaves something to desired.

firefox 4

Bookmarks

Provided you’ve disabled the Bookmarks Toolbar, a new button is featured next to the address and search bars. From there you can access all of your bookmarks.

firefox 4

If you choose to enable the Bookmarks Toolbar, the button will disappear.

Another small change, making it more similar in appearance to Chrome is the merging of the stop and reload buttons.

firefox 4

Add-Ons Manager

The Add-ons Manager has been slightly revamped and opens in a new tab rather than in the previously smaller window. The UI itself is also due more changes, and it is of course, not actually functioning. It should be interesting seeing what they are going to do with it once it’s ready to ship. Most of your add-ons probably won’t work with Firefox 4, but you can contribute to the testing process by installing the Add-On Compatibility Reporter.

mozilla firefox 4

Switch to Tab (Windows only)

An interesting feature available for the time being only for Windows users is the Switch to Tab feature. If you’re the kind of person who has several tabs open at a time, you will appreciate this new change. By typing part of the name of the site in the URL, an option will appear to switch to that tab.

mozilla firefox 4

HTML5 Support

Firefox 4 boasts native support for HTML5 video. There isn’t much in the way of HTML5 content out there just yet – but with time – that is bound to change.

mozilla firefox 4

Crash Protection

Crash Protection is listed as one of Firefox 4’s features, but in fact, this has been around since the release of 3.6.4. When using plugins like Adobe Flash, Apple Quicktime and Microsoft Silverlight, in the event that any of these plugins crashes, you will no longer be forced to restart Firefox entirely – losing any progress in other tabs. Instead, you are able to reload the page to restart the plugin.

Speed & Efficiency

In comparison to Firefox 3.6, there is a distinct difference in the speed. Running various Javascript benchmark tests, Firefox 4 was far ahead of 3.6, but still lagged behind Safari, and there was simply no comparison with Chrome.

Running the Acid 3 test, Firefox 4 still fails, unlike Chrome and Safari.

As far as memory usage was concerned, Firefox 4 seemed to be using more memory than 3.6 and of course more than double Chrome’s usage. There have been other reports that Firefox 4 was more efficient in terms of memory usage than 3.6, but that wasn’t the case in our experience.

Privacy

A significant change in Firefox’s privacy and security settings is in its changes to the CSS Web standard. In layman’s terms, the CSS flaw that exposed your browser history to websites has been remedied. The fix is not 100 per cent foolproof, but is a step in the right direction.

Developers will be interested to see other changes to Firefox 4 including Websocket support allowing development of real-time gaming and chatting, support for new CSS3 features allowing for faster display of webpages, a Web Console that allows for analysis of websites, and the JetPack SDK making Add-On development easier, and allowing you to install and use add-ons without restarting the browser.

Coming Soon

One much-needed feature in the works is the native syncing of settings, passwords, bookmarks, history and even open tabs, across multiple devices. According to Mozilla we can also look forward to faster browsing, new privacy controls and OS X and Linux specific themes.

Have you tried out Firefox 4 Beta? Let us know what you think of it in the comments.
