Never Forget Anything Ever Again With NotifyMe 2 and Bills [Giveaway]

Life on the fast track can be taxing. With the ever-growing list of responsibilities, we have more and more bills to pay and an even longer set of reminders and tasks there is to keep track of. Life on the fast track can be taxing.

In order to help reduce the burden of remembering the things you need to do and actually focus on the task at hand; we have 2 great iPhone apps to recommend. Both of these apps have been featured on MakeUseOf before: NotifyMe and Bills.

This week, we will be giving away 5 promo codes for each application. Find out how you can get one, after the jump.

But first let’s take a look at the apps individually.

NotifyMe 2

NotifyMe 2 is the updated version of NotifyMe and only supports iOS4. At the very core, it is still a reminder application. You create tasks/reminders which are synced over the air to NotifyMe’s servers. When your tasks are due, you receive a push notification sent to your iPhone.

All tasks/reminders can also be accessed online via the cloud server, notifymecloud.com and can be used to track your list of reminders easily.

In this updated version, you can also create local reminders which are stored on your device. This is a huge help you are only looking to create short-term reminders without internet access.

NotifyMe 2 also supports task sharing — any reminder can be shared with any authorised NotifyMe 2 user and will appear on their upcoming screen.

For a more in-depth review of the previous version (which will also provide you with a rough concept of how the app works), please read Never Forget Anything Again With NotifyMe for iPhone

Bills

Bills (also known as Bills ~ on your table) is a simple payment tracking application. This app helps you track pending bills and their corresponding due dates efficiently and elegantly as well.

Bills can be set to automatically repeat daily, weekly, monthly or annually. When a payment is due, you’ll receive a push notification with a gentle reminder (or pre-reminder, which you can set to occur days prior).

For a more in-depth review, check out Never Forget To Pay Another Bill Again With Bills ~ On Your Table

10 Free MP3 Albums To Download [Sound Sunday]

where can I download free mp3sThis week, Sound Sunday is back to its old self with a good mix of artists and musical styles. It’s time to make some space on your hard drive and re-load your MP3 player. Here comes the sound for a busy week!

Be sure to share anything you like with your friends through Twitter and Facebook. It’s an easy way to thank the artists for their hard work. And whenever you get around to it, visit a show and buy a CD.

RTB2 – The Both of It

Genre: folk rock, rock n roll, soul

where can I download free mp3s RTB2, the band that is said to perform raucous live shows, has now thrown their 2007 album The Both of It onto the free downloads market. The record sold a mere 500 copies. I’m sure that can be topped by twice the amount in downloads.

This free album download is provided free of input by Bandcamp.

RTB2 MySpace and Facebook.

Whale Belly – …The Smile at the End of the Slope

Genre: folk, blues, rock

where can I download free mp3s The band who claims to be influenced by Dr. Seuss and Marty McFly (Back to the Future) has just released their debut album …The Smile at the End of the Slope. The physical copy will be for sale in the beginning of August. Until then, the mp3 or wav download and artwork will have to do.

You can download …The Smile at the End of the Slope from Whale Belly’s Homepage.

Whale Belly MySpace and Homepage.

saddet – Groceries Remixes

Genre: ambient, electronica, techno, acoustic

where can I download free mp3s The entire remix album is based on a single song: Groceries. The song was a global hit. Interested in finding out what others would make of the material, saddet asked artists from around the world to remix his song. The result is a diversified collection of remixes in which none sounds like the other.

You can download the album in exchange for your eMail address from Bandcamp.

saddet Twitter and Homepage.

Carmen Costa – Stories Of Iron and Pride

Genre: alternative, rock, americana, psychedelic

where can I download free mp3s Carmen Costa is an independent rock band from Mexico. Their lead singer sounds nothing like the Brazilian singer of the past century, who must have inspired the band’s name. Their sophomore album Stories Of Iron and Pride is an extremely satisfying listen for fans of alternative rock.

Stories Of Iron and Pride is a free and no strings attached download provided by Bandcamp.

Carmen Costa MySpace and Homepage.

Boy in the Bubble – The King

Genre: indie, alternative, acoustic

where can I download free mp3s We have often heard that the King was back, but in this case The King is here! And while it isn’t Rock’n’Roll, Boy in the Bubble are an entirely non-sterile experience. The King is an album of mood swings, telling its story one song at a time.

The King and its Extras are available from Boy In The Bubble’s Homepage, no questions asked.

Boy in the Bubble MySpace and Homepage.

Glass Delirium – Thanks To A Monster’s Many Heads

Genre: experimental, progressive, rock, hard rock

where can I download free mp3s Comparing one band to another is never quite fair. When I listened to Glass Delirium, however, I was instantly reminded of Nightwish. And I must say, I like them a lot more. Cassi’s voice isn’t an irritation, it’s a pleasure.

Thanks To A Monster’s Many Heads is available from Glass Delirium’s Homepage. Every song is a single, but direct download.

Glass Delirium MySpace and Homepage.

Sunbeam Rd – Rutles, Magnet, Animals EP

Genre: indie, rock, post punk, psychedelic

where can I download free mp3s Sunbeam Rd. may seek what Neil Young, Madonna, and Sun Ra have sought before them: a unique sound that will impress and influence millions. With their five track EP they are on the best way. At least they sound rather like themselves and close to inspiration.

The Turtles, Magnets, Animals EP is available free and direct from Bandcamp.

Sunbeam Rd. MySpace and Facebook.

Ben Rector – Say Hey There Sampler

Genre: alternative, pop

where can I download free mp3s For as long as Ben can keep the singer / songwriter thing going, I’m sure he’ll find people who will listen. And eventually he might have something more entertaining to put on his MySpace Biography, than a video of him dancing in a cow costume. I’m looking forward to it.

You can download the free Say Hey There Sampler from NoiseTrade. An eMail address is required.

Ben Rector MySpace and Homepage.

Sean Wright – Up The Creek

Genre: rock, acoustic, pop

where can I download free mp3s Sean Wright is productivity on legs. He has been releasing an album at the end of each month since April 2007. That’s 39 albums plus seven more from the previous year. And if you look around on his homepage, you will find several free compilation albums as well as 40+ albums from his “Lo-Fi Years” 1990 to 2005. None of his music expresses madness, it’s all good.

Up The Creek is a free download available from Sean’s Homepage.

Sean Wright MySpace and Homepage.

My Son The Bum – Are We There Yet?

Genre: rock

where can I download free mp3s The homepage logo exclaims no cut & paste rock was to be found here and the Black Velvet Magazine review hits the nail on the head: “entertaining, infectious, never dull, what more can you ask for?” Great rock music, four albums full of it plus bonus material and all free.

Download Are We There Yet? and all other albums from My Son The Bum’s Homepage.

My Son The Bum MySpace and Homepage.

Past editions of Sound Sunday are available here. To have your free download mentioned in an upcoming article, shoot me an eMail (tina at makeuseof dot com). Please use the comments to make requests or share your feedback Any input is much appreciated!

Mac’s All-In-One Synchronisation Centre Gets An Update [Giveaway]

If you are like most modern people, you’d have your data scattered across multiple devices and places: computers, cell phones, online accounts, USB drives, and maybe even gaming devices. Synchronizing everything would be a mundane task and nobody wants to do it manually.

Luckily, Mac users have SyncMate. This all-in-one synchronization center will help you sync your data across multiple devices with little to no effort. All you have to do is add your devices/online accounts to the list, install the required drivers (if needed) and sync away.

01 Add Devices.jpg

SyncMate supports synchronization between Mac computer and: other Mac computers, Windows PC, Google Accounts, free online backup storage provided by Eltima, Sony PSP, and also a wide range of mobile devices. You can see the list of all compatible mobile devices here.

02 Supported devices.jpg

What I like most about SyncMate is its ability to perform simultaneous multiple device synchronization automatically at a customizable interval. So if you wanted to, you can have your Mac and Windows PC and Android Mobile Phone synced automatically every 10 minutes, every time those devices are within connection range without having to lift a finger.

03 AutoSync.jpg

We have discussed SyncMate before in these articles: “How To Sync Your Mac With Windows Mobile Devices & More” and “How To Sync Contacts, Calendars & Events Between Mac & PC“. We also had SyncMate Expert Edition giveaway.

Eltima – the maker of SyncMate – has just released the latest version of this software (v2.6) with many new features such as:

  • sync music, video and images between Mac and PC
  • import a folder with images or music/video from the synced device directly into iPhoto album or iTunes playlist on Mac
  • sync Mac Mail notes/Entourage notes/Stickies with Opera notes on Windows PC
  • convert audio files to various formats in iTunes & video plugin
  • ability to exclude certain files from synchronization when syncing folders.

To accompany this new release, Eltima is having another SyncMate Expert Edition giveaway for lucky MakeUseOf readers. For those who missed the previous giveaway, this is another chance to organize your data and make your life easier. We have 10 licenses to give away.

Share Anything, Anytime, Anywhere with Sendible [MakeUseOf Giveaway]

At MakeUseOf, we’re large supporters of social networking and its perks. It’s definitely something that we can’t get enough of. It allows us a chance to be closer to our readers — that’s you! And one of the best web services that allows us to do just that is Sendible.

It’s no secret that we’re huge fans of Sendible; we’ve featured them twice on MakeUseOf and gladly announce it every Sunday on Twitter and Facebook.

We’d very much like to share the opportunity with you to get to know and utilise Sendible. So this week, we will be giving away 5 one-year subscription for Sendible’s Marketeer account. Find out how you can win one after the jump.

For those who are unfamiliar with Sendible, please allow Jonathan Bennett to take you on a short guided tour. Here we go.

With Sendible, you can manage and use all of your social networking accounts from one central location. It’s much nicer to only load one web site instead of five or ten tabs. This will save you a lot of time, because you can read and send all of your messages at one time and place.

Sendible Networks Supported

It couldn’t be much easier to add all of your accounts to your Sendible profile. All you need to do is click on the “Add/Edit Services” tab at the top and a page full of services will load for you to add to your account. Sendible supports all of the major networks.

how to share links on facebook

The networks are listed in different categories, like “Status Updates and Microblogging”, “Photo Sharing” (think Flickr or Facebook photo albums) and “Link Sharing” (Facebook, Typepad, WordPress, Blogger, and more).

how to share links on facebook

Sendible also adds nice little features that aren’t built-in to the native web applications. For example, Twitter messages are limited to 140 characters, but Sendible’s message box is able to split them up into multiple tweets. For those times when you can’t just keep it short, this feature comes to the rescue. Just type your full message as normal and Sendible takes care of the rest.

How to Share Links with Live Automatic Preview on Facebook

One feature I particularly like about Sendible that is useful for me is the ability to post links that automatically grab a text preview of an article and post it on Facebook. This is a feature that many other services don’t provide or they do it in a limited fashion.

Using Sendible’s message box to compose is intuitive and fast. You can quickly type up your message, create short links and schedule your posts all from the same page.

how to share links on facebook

I can’t stress enough how being able to do it all from one box saves a lot of time. You could write an article for your blog (including images), post it, make a short link for it, then quickly mention it to your friends on Facebook and Twitter with ease, all from the same message box. And as I said before, when you post your link on Facebook, Sendible knows to grab the data from the link too:

Your Own Blog

Besides being able to post to your own blog if you have one, you could also create a blog using Sendible’s own internal blog service. Your blog will be available at http://your-name.sendible.com. Although the styling choices are limited for free users, it does come with a nice minimalistic theme.

You are given many settings to customize your blog, like the standard fields of blog name, blog tagline, author name, bio, and an image of yourself.

how to share links

Writing a post is as easy as typing in any other blogging software. You can even schedule blog posts, just like you can schedule your status updates. Once your blog has been posted, you and everyone else can view what you write and leave comments.

Reminding & Scheduling

I’m the type of guy who likes a clear mind. If I can write down something and have a machine remind me of it later, then that’s perfect. My brain needs all of the free space and energy it can get. So this is why I’m glad Sendible has a nice scheduling service built-in. It’s good to be able to jot down something in the moment, schedule a time and let it fly.

Not only can you use it to schedule status updates or blog posts at a certain time, you could even use it as a personal reminder service. You can also setup recurring reminders. Another popular idea is to schedule blog posts while you’re on vacation so your readers are not left without you for the whole time.

how to share links in facebook

If you haven’t looked at Sendible in a while, give it another try. It’s a fast and useful all-in-one service that is definitely worth your time. For power users, they offer even more features at a monthly price.

It’s simple, just follow the instructions.

5 Must-Have Apps For Your Symbian S60 Touch Mobile Phone

The Symbian operating system is the most widely used smart-phone platform on the planet. Despite not being the prettiest thing to look at compared to recent offerings from rivals such as Apple, HTC and Blackberry, the recently liberated Symbian operating system continues to ship on not only Nokia mobiles but Sony Ericsson and Samsung have started to use it too.

But you won’t care, as you’ve probably already got one. Good start, as you really can’t live without these five on your Symbian device.

Jbak Taskman

This freeware task manager is definitely the most boring, yet most useful app on this list. Replacing the clunky, limited and sometimes slow to respond in-built Symbian task manager is one of the best gifts you can give your phone.

Jbak’s offering provides a slick and minimal interface from which you can list processes, threads and memory information with ease.

Killing programs is a doddle – even if they’re unresponsive and busy. There’s a handy autorun feature allowing you to automatically launch programs when your phone starts up, and you can even view and manage the phone’s hidden processes.

This should be the first application you install on your Symbian mobile phone.

Snaptu

The developers promise “a world full of free apps on any phone” and they’re not wrong. This app functions as a one-stop portal to your social networking, news and information desires. There’s full Facebook and Twitter support at lightning speed – you will not find a faster means of accessing your social networks.

The in-built news reader allows you to add as many RSS feeds as you like, and the weather and sports apps keep you in the loop, on the go.

At last count there were 33 applications within this one single app that can be added to the home screen. Snaptu provides a simple and fast interface from which to access some very often used websites and services, and best of all it’s completely free (with the odd banner advert here and there, but who’s complaining?) and available from Snaptu.com. Get the full low-down right here.

Opera Mobile

For a truly mobile web experience you’ll want the highly acclaimed Opera Mobile. This bite-size browser packs enough punch to be able to bring full webpages to the confines of your mobile phone, allowing you to browse the “real” internet on the go.

The recently updated interface makes touch screen browsing easier than ever, and the in-built Opera on-screen keyboard looks and feels great.  Use of the same SpeedDial quick-start interface as its bigger brother means your favourite websites are a greasy thumbprint away once the application launches.

The Opera Mobile browser also comes with Opera Turbo support, a service designed to cut down on the amount of bandwidth a website would typically use – although I’d recommend switching to Wi-Fi if you’re planning on doing any serious browsing. Grab it for free from the Opera website.

Skype

The popular VoIP platform seems like an even better idea on your mobile phone, don’t you think? Free phone calls, instant text chat and reduced rates to phone numbers are all good reasons to have this useful little program with you on the move.

You’ll soon bin that USB Skype phone once you realise your Wi-Fi-enabled mobile can do the job, and stay in your pocket the whole time. As well as the standard voice and text features, Skype mobile allows you to update your profile and picture, add new contacts on the go and send or receive files from your contacts.

The client’s free, but if you absolutely love it you’ll probably want to invest in some Skype credit to allow you to call and SMS all your friends to tell them the good news. Download it from the Skype mobile homepage.

Skyfire

Introducing the only mobile browser with decent Flash support, Skyfire is by no means perfect but provides a great way to stream video to your phone. YouTube support within the browser is excellent, although you’ll probably get some “Your browser’s not up to it” messages from YouTube’s end. Soldier on however, and you’ll be able to use the full YouTube website on your mobile phone.

It’s no replacement for Opera, but it gets the job done. There’s no in-built keyboard, and a simple SpeedDial feature would be nice, but if Flash is your thing then Skyfire will excel where other mobile browsers call it a day.

Download it from Skyfire.com or read what the fuss is about right here.

Have you got any favourite apps not featured here? Trouble with an app on a particular device? Tell us about it in the comments.
