Battle It Out With Players Across The World On Hero Fighter

play fighting games onlineIt is one thing to play a fighting game like Street Fighter where you battle out computerized opponents. In time, you eventually learn the tricks and techniques of the computer, and you can usually conquer the opponent once you get enough practice in. But when you’re playing other real players who, like you, have been practicing their moves and tactics for some time, the level of excitement and competition multiplies.

I used to be a major video game player, until I had a family and then only turned to video games in times of high stress. It is usually now an outlet that I use when I just need to set my work down and forget about the world for a while. So, I was very excited to stumble across a very cool fighting game online this month called Hero Fighter that I could install and play right on my laptop.

We’ve covered a number of places where you can play fighting games online at MakeUseOf before. Simon previously covered three pretty cool games including Manga Fighter for kids, the Lost Saga, and of course the very cool Toribash fighting game. Hero Fighter is a bit different than these in that it’s an arena game with no real plot other than taking out your opponent using whatever means at your disposal. And it’s a very cool way to relieve stress.

Hero Fighter is a desktop download for Windows, and it includes a second add-on “Room Server” that’s packaged up with the install. When you launch the game, you’re presented with the option to either start playing immediately in single-player mode, or you can connect to a network game.

I wanted to warm up a bit, as it’s been quite some time since I’ve had time to play fighting games online. After clicking on the key settings and adjusting them to my preferences, I clicked on Start Game. After setting up myself as player 1 and adding the computer opponent, game play (in easy mode) started up.

The first thing I noticed about gameplay is the quality of graphics. The background, objects and all of the scenery are well done, and the effects of hitting objects, like logs or rocks, are realistic. I also thought the soundtrack was pretty cool too. After a few swings, the computer apparently got pretty fed up with me and went into a full charge, as you can see here. A couple more swings of my hefty sword and he was down for the count. I was victorious in my very first round, and feeling pretty good about myself.

Feeling pretty confident, I went back to the main menu and chose network mode. Connecting is pretty easy, you just select the official room list first and you’ll see a list of available servers.

online fighting games

I was thinking there wouldn’t be anyone online because it’s so late here, but then glancing at the list I remembered that we’re talking a global gamer world here. There were a few folks online in Hong Kong and Germany – and people coming online and offline constantly. After browsing down the short list of servers available this late at night, I decided to join the folks over in Hong Kong to show them what a western boy is capable of.

A few things that I noticed about network play is that your latency is heavily dependent upon the location of the server you choose – so try to stick to your own country if possible. However, even playing on a Hong Kong server wasn’t too bad. Game play was relatively smooth, even with six players hacking it out against each other.

The moment I entered the battlefield with these seasoned gamers from Hong Kong, I immediately entered into a charge against an unsuspecting player that had just run off-screen to the lower right. Now, if you look up and to the right of me, there’s this innocent looking red-headed girl holding a huge spear. Well, she wasn’t eyeing me because she thought I was cute. Within about four strides, she was all over me, and within five or six swipes of that spear, I was flat on my back – game over. So much for that!

One thing that I can tell you about this game is that it is easily one of the most addictive network fighting games that I’ve ever played. The controls aren’t overly complicated – it’s basically four directions, guard, attack and jump. The secret is practicing with getting the timing and placement just right. The game is so intuitive and easy to learn, that a few rounds with the computer in single player mode, and before long you’ll be battling out in tournaments as well as the best of them.

Have you ever played Hero Fighter? What do you think of it? Do you play of any other fighting games online that are as good or better? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

The 5 Coolest Wii Addons To Enhance Your Gaming [Gadget Corner]

If you’re lucky enough to have a Nintendo Wii, you may know that one of the funnest things about owning one is the ability to include additional accessories or addons to your gaming experience.

Ever since the console launched, a whole flurry of these Wii addons have become available. There are so many of them to choose from, how do you know which ones to buy and which ones to skip?

Let’s take a look at the 5 coolest Wii addons to enhance your gaming.

Wii MotionPlus

The Wii MotionPlus is a simple addon for your Wii Remote controller. Just attach this expansion device to the bottom of the Wii-mote and you’re all set.

The addon increases the accuracy of your controller by using additional sensors to respond to any of your motions in a 3-D space. This allows for noticeably enhanced gameplay control on compatible games, including Wii Sports Resort and a variety of other titles.

Wii Wheel

Another cool addon to have is the Wii Wheel. The peripheral simply turns the Wii Remote into a steering wheel. Just snap in your Wii-mote and you’re good to go.

Now, there is a trigger on the back of the wheel to function the Wii-mote’s “B” button, but that’s it. The addon itself adds no functionality, just the feel of a steering wheel in the player’s hands.

It doesn’t look like much, but it sure is a blast to play Mario Kart Wii with this thing.

Wii Balance Board

The Wii Balance Board isn’t just for exercise games. The accessory acts as a video game controller, just like the Wii Remote. Using Bluetooth technology and multiple pressure sensors, the board is able to sense your weight and balance to interpret the movements of your feet.

A wide variety of titles utilize the Wii Balance Board addon, including the popular Wii Fit. Be sure to check out the Top 5 Wii Fitness Games To Get Into Shape From Home.

Wii Zapper

If you are a fan of first-person shooters and basically any shooting style video game, you may want to consider checking out the official Wii Zapper peripheral.

Like the Wii Wheel, the addon is simply a shell for you to attach the Wii Remote up on top and the Nunchuk in the back. Uniting those two together, the result is a more gun-style controller that’s easier on the arms and gives you greater control when playing games that test your shooting skills.

Nyko Perfect Shot

If you’d prefer a pistol-like design, the Perfect Shot from Nyko is one of the best gun shells on the market.

The addon features a comfortable ergonomic grip and, unlike the Zapper, its design requires only one hand for operation, allowing your other hand to wield the Nunchuk or other accessories at the same time. Best of all, though, is its satisfying spring-loaded trigger. This is a third-party addon done right.

What are some of your favorite Wii addons? Do you play with any of these? Let us know in the comments.

3 Free Interactive Movies On The Web Where You Are In Control

interactive internet moviesYour mom told you to never play with your food, but no one ever told you that you shouldn’t play with your fiction. You may know of “Choose Your Own Adventure” books and text adventures, but those things are practically relics.

Their more modern manifestation is the interactive movie, and recent years have brought us several high-quality interactive movies available for free right on the web.

Interactive Internet movies, although perhaps a bit gimmicky, are in some ways pushing the envelope with what can be done with a story once you introduce viewer participation. Some have game elements, and some are multimedia experiences that aren’t restricted to just video. All of them give you some control over the experience.

The Outbreak

interactive internet movies

The Outbreak is the creation of a company called SilkTricky. It’s a pretty straightforward zombie movie except for the fact that you are, of course, in charge of the protagonist’s survival. If you’re the sort of person who yells “look behind you!” or “run faster, you idiot!” during horror movies, this is probably exactly what you need.

It’s pretty simple: you watch a scene and then choose between a couple of options, like whether to go in the basement or the backyard, and whether to attempt to save others or leave them behind.

interactive movies

It’s a lot like a Choose Your Own Adventure book in that there are right choices and wrong choices, and if you make a series of wrong choices you’ll eventually be led to your death. Unlike a Choose Your Own Adventure book, though, you don’t have to use a ton of bookmarks or stick your fingers in a bunch of different pages in order to backtrack and make different choices. The Outbreak includes an easy-to-navigate chapter selection that lets you go back and try out any of the choices that you didn’t make the first time.

interactive movies

The Outbreak isn’t very long or complex, but it’s a pretty neat interactive zombie movie.

Bank Run

Bank Run is another interactive Internet movie, also made by SilkTricky. The story this time around is that our protagonist becomes unwittingly involved in a conspiracy and the bank that he works for is out to get him.

interactive movies

Like with The Outbreak, at the ends of scenes you have to choose between two options about how to proceed. The choices are a bit more limited this time around, though, because one is always right and the other will always get you killed. After getting killed, you can rewind to choose the other option. This means that there’s really only one path through the movie.

But what Bank Run has that The Outbreak doesn’t is some more game-like elements. From time to time, you have to press a key on your keyboard to dodge and survive.

interactive clips

Part 2 of Bank Run is available on the iPhone from the App Store for $2. It continues the story and becomes a full-fledged shooting game in some scenes where you’re in complete control of the protagonist’s fate as you fight your way past enemies.

HBO Imagine

This is one of the most unique interactive movies out there. Its story is difficult to explain because it stretches across so many characters and subplots, but that ends up making it a lot more unique than a simple zombie outbreak or a bank conspiracy. It includes an affair, an art heist, teddy bears stuffed with money, and even a funeral for a murdered mime (killed, fittingly enough, for “not keeping his mouth shut”).

interactive clips

Although you’re not allowed to make any choices that influence the direction of the plot, you do have control over the order that you view the narrative in and, for certain key scenes, you also have control over your camera perspective. The scenes with multiple camera perspectives are truly the highlights of the experience.

In these scenes, you can rotate a cube to view the ongoing action from four different angles, each revealing the things that different characters are (in most cases secretly) up to. It’s up to you to piece together these different activities to figure out whether the affair and the art heist are really just an affair and an art heist… or a decoy for something bigger that’s going on.

A lot of the scenes that don’t have multiple camera views are still filmed in unique ways that manipulate your perspective. In one scene, for example, a mime appears to be miming being stuck in a box. When the camera zooms out, however, it is revealed that he is actually in a truck sinking to the bottom of a lake, and his apparent miming is expressing a very real desire to escape.

interactive internet movies

HBO Imagine’s originality with the way it tells its story isn’t only restricted to presenting many of its filmed scenes with unique perspectives. In fact, HBO Imagine branches out beyond film entirely: there are also audio clips, newspaper clips, and other pieces of text. You choose the order in which you watch/listen to/read all of these different elements of the story and attempt to piece it together. HBO Imagine is a true interactive multimedia experience.

Conclusion

What do you think of interactive Internet movies? Are they just gimmicks, or are they the biggest innovation for narratives since the invention of the novel? Do you know of any other awesome interactive movies?

8 iPhone Games You Won’t Believe Are Free & 1 Paid App For Free

There’s probably more game apps in the iTunes store than any other kind of app, and while most of them are in the 0.99 cent range, there are some great choices out there that will cost you absolutely nothing.

The following is a list of 8 iPhone games you won’t believe are free. They’ve either got great graphics and sound effects, or are just a great gaming experience overall.

Most importantly, none of these apps have any limitations on the actual gameplay, but a couple of of them are ad-supported free versions of paid apps. In the big scheme of things, that’s a pretty small price to pay to get a great app for free.

Scramboni

For all the word nerds out there, Scramboni [iTunes link] is a great multiplayer online game. Each game consists of 20 rounds, where you have to unscramble letters to form a word. There are three levels, and you can only progress to the higher levels after you’ve played, and scored, enough.

For each round, you will find out how fast you were in comparison to your opponents, and overall you will be ranked by the number of points you score.

Texas Hold’em Live

The graphics on Texas Hold’em Live [iTunes link], a huge online multiplayer game are pretty impressive, and it’s surprising that the it’s free.

Play the Texas Hold ‘Em version of poker against opponents from around the world, or if you don’t want to go online, you can also play a quick round against as many AI (Artificial Intelligence) opponents as you like.

Backgammon Lite

If you are a fan of backgammon, Backgammon Lite [iTunes link] will definitely appeal to you with its great graphics and sound effects. And if you don’t know how to play backgammon, this is a great way to learn.

You can either play a single player game against an AI, play in peer to peer mode using Bluetooth to connect to another iPhone or in pass-and-play mode.

Topple

Topple [iTunes link] is a game in which you have to stack as many wacky shapes on top of each other to reach a specific goal. As you finish each level, the next level is unlocked, where the target line gets higher and higher. Just make sure you don’t drop too many of the shapes into the abyss, because once you lose 5 blocks, the game ends.

Froggy Jump

Froggy Jump [iTunes link] is a highly addictive game. Guide your frog by tilting your phone, jumping onto little patches of grass that give him a boost to jump higher. As you jump around, try to collect all the letters of the goal word, collect crystals, and unlock new levels and features.

Words With Friends Free

Scrabble fans can have all the free fun they want with the ad-supported version of Words with Friends [iTunes link]. You can either have the game match you up with a random opponent from anywhere in the world, or you can invite your friends to play against you. You can also play and pass with a friend using one iPhone.

Words with Friends also makes use of the iPhone’s push notification feature so you don’t have to keep the app open to know when it’s your turn.

Crazy Chipmunks

Crazy Chipmunks [iTunes link] is a highly addictive game that has three modes of play. In Classic mode you have 30 seconds to tap all of the little brown chipmunks popping out of their holes, avoiding the pinks ones. In challenge mode, there is no time limit, but rather the game ends once you have hit three of the pink chipmunks.

Update: Crazy Chipmunks is no longer free.

The final mode is quite different from the first two, using the same graphics for a memory game.

Kung Fu Touch

Kung Fu Touch [iTunes link] is a cute game with really good graphics. Get in touch with your inner Kung Fu Master, and chop flying sushi (amongst other objects) before they hit you.

The graphics and sounds effects are excellent, but if you’re planning on playing this game in a quiet room – you should be warned that the splash intro cannot be muted. There are two modes of play – single player, or online duel gaming with a random opponent.

Traffic Rush

Traffic Rush [iTunes link] is actually a paid app, but it’s available for free for a limited time. In Traffic Rush you have to keep the traffic going at an intersection. Speed cars up by swiping them across the screen, and stop them at the intersection by tapping them. How long can you keep traffic going without a collision?

Traffic Rush’s graphics are simple and are more reminiscent of older games of this sort, but that is part of its charm.

Another great free iPhone game that definitely deserves a mention is Tap Tap Revenge.
