Pump: Awesome All-In-One Video Manager & More

video managerIn this era of highly competitive markets, we can spot two general trends among software makers to stay afloat in the sea of similar applications; focusing on only one feature and polishing it well, or throwing in as many features as they can.

The latter option is true of multimedia managers. Most of them can handle all kinds of formats and also comes with a bunch of extra bells and whistles. But even among those all-in-one multimedia suites, the Pump video manager still stands out.

A Video Manager & More

What is Pump? At its very core, it is a Windows-based video manager, an application to manage everything related to video collections, starting from playing, managing, converting, to searching and downloading. It can even subscribe to RSS feeds and download torrents.

If you’d like to try, you can download and install the app. After the installation process is done, you will be greeted with the “First Launch Assistant” which will help you set the application to fit your needs.

video manager

Using this assistant you can import your multimedia collections (audio and video) including the ones from your iTunes Library. You can also install additional components needed to play and convert multimedia files. In my installation, since I already had VLC and Quicktime components, I only had to install the Lame component to be able to convert CDs into MP3s.

video manager software

Pump will also modify your firewall settings. Since most Pump features depend on an internet connection, it’s important that Pump has access to the net.

video manager software

The Pump main window is divided into two main parts. On the left are the menus. You can access all of Pump’s activities from this pane, including torrent activities and available external drives.

video manager software

On the right is the main pane where you can monitor individual activities. If you open audio/video files, you can control the playback from there. This main window is also a web browser. So you can enter an URL and browse away directly from Pump.

free video manager

To play an imported video, for example, all you have to do is to click on the Videos option from the left pane and choose the video from the main window.

free video manager

Pump comes with pre-configured RSS feed subscriptions of Rocket Boom and Mininova. But you can easily add your own RSS feeds by clicking on the plus button and type (or paste) the link.

free video manager

It’s been mentioned before that Pump is also a torrent client. If you want to download a torrent, you have to add the torrent from the “File – Import torrents” menu. I’ve tried the feature, and even though it’s not as polished as a veteran torrent client like uTorrent, Pump is good enough.

02e_Import_Torrents.png

If you like video sites like YouTube, you can browse the site directly from the Pump window. And it’s as fully featured as any ordinary browser.

03_Add_To_queue.png

And if there’s a video that you like, you can download it directly using “Download the flash video” link that will appears at the top of the webpage. Please note that this link is not always available.

03b_Download_YouTube.png

A friendly copyright warning will appear before you can download the video. If you want to always be reminded, check the “Show this message again next time” box. Otherwise, the message will appear only once.

03c_Download_Warning.png

Then all you have to do is wait until the video download is finished. Meanwhile, you can continue browsing to find and watch other videos.

video manager

If you have a list of videos that you want to watch, you can do the video search and download the results directly from Pump.

Video_Search.png

Despite some glitches that you can expect from beta stage applications (the current release of Pump at the time of writing is v.0.8), Pump has the potential to be a complete and solid all-in-one multimedia manager.

Have you tried Pump? Or do you have your own favorite multimedia manager? Please share your thoughts and opinions using the comments below.

3 Top Ways People Get Infected by An Email Virus [In Case You Were Wondering]

get infected by an email virusViruses are some of the oldest parasites known to humans. They probably evolved while the first cells started to populate the planet. With the invention of computers, witty programmers copied the properties of biological viruses and translated them into tiny computer programs.

The sole purpose of any virus is to replicate and spread itself. Damage to the host system is a potential consequence. The most common way for a virus to enter a computer is via email. So how do people get infected by an email virus?

Shouldn’t everyone know how viruses enter a computer and be prepared? In this article I will explore the top 3 ways people get infected by an email virus and I will point out how you can avoid such a virus infection.

1. A Virus As An Email Hoax

As mentioned in the introduction, viruses typically are programs. But that’s not always the case. Some viruses speculate on nothing but your naivety. Did you ever forward a chain letter, a virus warning, or the email of a desperate parent whose child needed an organ donation? You probably fell for a hoax and helped to spread it.

In this case the virus is the email itself, although it’s not really an infection. The damage, however, is the same as with other viruses: clogging up of inboxes and mailservers. Email viruses generally cause a waste of time, resources, and energy.

email virus protection

Next time you receive a potential hoax email, don’t forward it unless you’re sure it’s genuine. About.com features Top 10 lists of latest viruses, virus alerts, and virus hoaxes. Hoax-Slayer is a good resource to get informed about email hoaxes and eventually verify the credibility of an email you have received. Or if the email has tried to defraud you or steal your information, report it to the proper authorities.

2. A Virus In An Email Attachment

While forwarding an email doesn’t cause you any major damage, an infection with a “real” computer virus, i.e. a self-replicating program, is a lot more critical. There are “harmless” variants that just forward themselves to your contacts. However, a virus may also be programmed for example, to destroy specific files on your system.

Most viruses are delivered through an email attachment. Attachments that contain viruses are either executable programs (file types: .com, .exe, .vbs, .zip, .scr, .dll, .pif, .js) or macro viruses (file types: .doc, .dot, .xls, .xlt). The safest way to avoid them is to not open email attachments.

Note that you can safely open Word documents in alternative programs that don’t support macros, such as Wordpad or Open Office. Some viruses try to hide their true file extension by adding two of them. That’s what the ILOVEYOU virus did; its name was “LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.TXT.vbs”.

get infected by an email virus

The good news is that downloading and reading the email will not do you any harm. As long as the attachment is not opened, the virus won’t hatch. If you don’t know the sender and if the email text is suspicious, just delete the email along with the attachment.

If one of your contacts, however, was infected by a virus, the fraud is not as easy to spot. Carefully review each email and play it safe. Many web mail services can scan email attachments for viruses. If you use a desktop mail program like Thunderbird or Outlook and don’t have a virus scanner that can scan email attachments, you may save (not open!) the attachment to your hard drive, where it becomes accessible for your virus scanner. Just remember never to open an attachment before it was scanned.

3. A Virus In The Email Body

Last but not least, malicious content can be found in the body of an email. Today, HTML is a common element of emails as it is used to embed pictures and links. However, HTML can also be used to embed scripts that execute automatically and subsequently infect your computer with a virus. That’s why many mail programs, by default, block HTML and make you click a button to display content of trustworthy sources. It’s a precaution you should not turn off.

Also, URLs can be a virus in disguise. You may see a harmless link that either leads you to a website that executes a malicious script or links to a completely different URL where you automatically download a self-executing virus.

get infected by an email virus

Taken together, the same rule as for attachments applies: never view or access links from suspicious sources.

Summary

The reason why all these strategies work is because the respective email is cleverly designed to foul its recipients. It may be a harmless call for sympathy or a threat that calls for instant action. Most people will readily click any link that is presented to them in order to solve a problem or access further information.

What you can do is the following:

  • Act smart, not fast.
  • Verify the source of any suspicious email before you act.
  • Generally, do not blindly forward emails, open attachments and links, or view HTML content.
  • Get an antivirus program and regularly update its virus definitions.
  • Make sure your mail program is set to not automatically download and open attachments or display HTML content.

Upload, Display & Share Your Flickr Photos The Easy Way

share flickr photosWhen it comes to sharing photos online, Flickr monopolises the playing field, and with good reason. With any popular website comes many third party apps aiming to make your experience all that much better.

There are all sorts of applications created especially for uploading, displaying and sharing your photographs, as well as a whole raft of ways to sift through the countless photos uploaded every day.

Below is a list of a few of the easiest cross-platform applications that you can use with your Flickr account allowing you to upload, display and share your photos.

Upload Your photos

The official FlickrUploadr is the best option available for uploading images to Flickr, without having to use the website. It gives you all the options available on Flickr, from adding titles, a description and tags, as well as adding photos to sets, and choosing privacy settings.

After authorizing your account, click the ‘Add photos‘ button, and you will be able to navigate to your photos, and select as many as you want at one time. Alternatively, you can use the drag and drop method to select your photos. Adding information to each photo is done by clicking on the image, and entering all the information you want to accompany your photo.

Flickr Uploadr is compatible with Mac and Windows.

Change The Way Your Flickr Photos Are Displayed

You can generate a link from On Black that will display your image without any clutter around it, and best of all, with a black background. Generating the link is easy – get the URL of the photo you want to display, and enter it on the On Black page.

upload flickr photos

You can also authorize your Flickr account to work directly with On Black, allowing you to browse through thumbnails of your latest photos.

After you have selected your photo, preview your picture, copy the HTML text found above the photo, and paste it into your Flickr description. This will create a link to the page, giving your viewers a quick and easy way to view your photos as you want them to.

You can also add the On Black bookmarklet to your browser, for another easy and fast way to generate links. If you’re looking for a more elaborate option on how to display your Flickr photos, you might want to consider creating a portfolio using Pullfolio.

Share Your Flickr Photos

If you want display the latest photos from your Flickr account on your WordPress blog, an easy-to-use plugin is FlickrRSS. Add the plugin from the WordPress Plugin Directory. Choose how many photos you want displayed on your site, and enter your Flickr user ID.

If you would rather not display all of your latest Flickr photos, you can choose to display photos only from a specific set, group, community or even your favourites.

display flickr photos

You can also choose to store the images on your server to lighten the load on Flickr. Be sure to add the FlickrRSS widget to your sidebar displaying your latest photos.

display flickr photos

If you’re not a WordPress user, you can always create a slideshow to embed on any website using FlickrSlidr.

Flickr has taken all the hard work out of sending notifications to major social media sites. If you want your friends on Facebook to be notified each time you upload new photos, go into your Account settings, and click on Sharing & Extending. From there you will be able to connect your Facebook account to your Flickr account.

display flickr photos

If you want your Twitter followers to be notified, SnapTweet is a good option. SnapTweet allows you to share only the photos you choose to send to your Twitter stream, which comes in handy especially if you upload a lot of photographs to Flickr.

Any photo that is tagged with the predetermined word that you have chosen will be updated on Twitter.

share flickr photos

SnapTweet offers an alternative way to update your Twitter stream on a case by case basis by sending a DM to the SnapTweet account with the word ‘latest’ in it – and your stream will be updated with the link and title of your latest photo.

Other Useful Flickr Apps

There is no limit to the third party applications built around Flickr and no limit to what you can do with them. If you want a comprehensive Flickr experience without visiting the website, give Flickroom a try. Or you might be looking for a way to automate set management on Flickr. If you want to backup your Flickr photos check out Downloadr, FlickrDown and a few others. If you want to search Flickr there are many different ways to do so, including searching by camera model, and many others. And Flickr even has a whole bunch of games built around it.

Share Anything, Anytime, Anywhere with Sendible [MakeUseOf Giveaway]

At MakeUseOf, we’re large supporters of social networking and its perks. It’s definitely something that we can’t get enough of. It allows us a chance to be closer to our readers — that’s you! And one of the best web services that allows us to do just that is Sendible.

It’s no secret that we’re huge fans of Sendible; we’ve featured them twice on MakeUseOf and gladly announce it every Sunday on Twitter and Facebook.

We’d very much like to share the opportunity with you to get to know and utilise Sendible. So this week, we will be giving away 5 one-year subscription for Sendible’s Marketeer account. Find out how you can win one after the jump.

For those who are unfamiliar with Sendible, please allow Jonathan Bennett to take you on a short guided tour. Here we go.

With Sendible, you can manage and use all of your social networking accounts from one central location. It’s much nicer to only load one web site instead of five or ten tabs. This will save you a lot of time, because you can read and send all of your messages at one time and place.

Sendible Networks Supported

It couldn’t be much easier to add all of your accounts to your Sendible profile. All you need to do is click on the “Add/Edit Services” tab at the top and a page full of services will load for you to add to your account. Sendible supports all of the major networks.

how to share links on facebook

The networks are listed in different categories, like “Status Updates and Microblogging”, “Photo Sharing” (think Flickr or Facebook photo albums) and “Link Sharing” (Facebook, Typepad, WordPress, Blogger, and more).

how to share links on facebook

Sendible also adds nice little features that aren’t built-in to the native web applications. For example, Twitter messages are limited to 140 characters, but Sendible’s message box is able to split them up into multiple tweets. For those times when you can’t just keep it short, this feature comes to the rescue. Just type your full message as normal and Sendible takes care of the rest.

How to Share Links with Live Automatic Preview on Facebook

One feature I particularly like about Sendible that is useful for me is the ability to post links that automatically grab a text preview of an article and post it on Facebook. This is a feature that many other services don’t provide or they do it in a limited fashion.

Using Sendible’s message box to compose is intuitive and fast. You can quickly type up your message, create short links and schedule your posts all from the same page.

how to share links on facebook

I can’t stress enough how being able to do it all from one box saves a lot of time. You could write an article for your blog (including images), post it, make a short link for it, then quickly mention it to your friends on Facebook and Twitter with ease, all from the same message box. And as I said before, when you post your link on Facebook, Sendible knows to grab the data from the link too:

Your Own Blog

Besides being able to post to your own blog if you have one, you could also create a blog using Sendible’s own internal blog service. Your blog will be available at http://your-name.sendible.com. Although the styling choices are limited for free users, it does come with a nice minimalistic theme.

You are given many settings to customize your blog, like the standard fields of blog name, blog tagline, author name, bio, and an image of yourself.

how to share links

Writing a post is as easy as typing in any other blogging software. You can even schedule blog posts, just like you can schedule your status updates. Once your blog has been posted, you and everyone else can view what you write and leave comments.

Reminding & Scheduling

I’m the type of guy who likes a clear mind. If I can write down something and have a machine remind me of it later, then that’s perfect. My brain needs all of the free space and energy it can get. So this is why I’m glad Sendible has a nice scheduling service built-in. It’s good to be able to jot down something in the moment, schedule a time and let it fly.

Not only can you use it to schedule status updates or blog posts at a certain time, you could even use it as a personal reminder service. You can also setup recurring reminders. Another popular idea is to schedule blog posts while you’re on vacation so your readers are not left without you for the whole time.

how to share links in facebook

If you haven’t looked at Sendible in a while, give it another try. It’s a fast and useful all-in-one service that is definitely worth your time. For power users, they offer even more features at a monthly price.

Add Loads of Features to the Default WordPress Editor with Dean’s FCKEditor

ckeditor wordpress plugin If you blog, you’ll understand perfectly that writing using a web editor – like blogging – is totally different from writing using an ordinary word processor, like what most people do at work. Even though today’s blogging platforms have already provided users with a visual editor and regular people without extensive HTML knowledge can write content for the web easily, the default editing features are limited. A blogging platform’s built-in editor has far less features than the simplest desktop text editor.

Meet CKEditor (previously known as FCKEditor), the web-based WYSIWYG text editor which promises to bring common editing features found on desktop editing applications like Microsoft Word and OpenOffice to the web. And for WordPress users, the power of CKEditor is brought to the WP editor in the form of Dean’s FCKEditor for WordPress plugin.

Activating The Advanced CKEditor WordPress Plugin

Just like any other WordPress plugins, you can easily install the FCKEditor via the WordPress Plugins menu. All you have to do is click the “Add New” button, enter ‘FCKEditor’ into the search field, and click the “Install Now” link from the search result.

ckeditor wordpress plugin

After the installation process is done, activate the plugin by clicking the “Activate Plugin” link.

01b Plugin Install - Activate.png

And what exactly will happen by activating the plugin? To give you a better picture, let’s compare the look of WordPress editor with and without FCKEditor. This is the default editor:

02a Add New Post - Without FCK Editor.png

And below, the CKEditor WordPress editor plugin is integrated into the blogging platform. The WordPress editor is transformed into a full-featured word processor with advanced editing features that you won’t find in the original editor.

02b Add New Post - With FCKEditor-1.png

But the transformation is not limited to the blogging editor but also in the comment section of the blog posts. Armed with this ability, visitors can leave more than just simple plain text comments.

02c Comment Field.png

Getting Familiar With The Editor

For those who might feel a little bit overwhelmed by all of the colorful buttons and want a distraction-free writing environment, you can hide those buttons by clicking the small arrow button at the right corner of the writing area.

02f Hiding The Toolbar.png

And for those hardcore web coders who can’t sleep well before a little dose of “a href”s or “div style”s (you know who you are), you can still access the HTML editor by clicking on the “Source” button – the first button on the top left corner of the editor.

02g Source View.png

There’s also the “Smileys” button that will give you a bunch of smileys that you can insert into your writing.

02h Insert Smiley.png

Surely, there are tons of other features that you get from FCKEditor such as the ability to change the font color on the fly, create subscripts and superscripts, insert flash elements, change font type, size, style, and more. If you want to know which button is related to which feature, just hover your mouse pointer above one of the buttons and FCKEditor will gladly tell you.

02i Editing Result.jpg

Messing With The Settings

If you want to dig a little bit deeper into FCKEditor, you can go to “Settings – FCKEditor” menu from the WordPress sidebar.

03a Settings.png

Inside, you will find several options that you can ‘tweak’, such as the skin and built-in spell checker from the “Common Options“.

03b Common Options.png

Or the height of the editor and the ability to choose which buttons should appear on the editor’s toolbar from “Post/Page Editor options“. If you use several buttons regularly and never touch the others, you can delete the unused buttons simply by deleting their names from the “Set the toolbar buttons” field.

ckeditor wordpress plugin

The similar thing goes for “Comment Editor Options“. You can activate/deactivate FCKEditor for the blog comment section, set the editor’s height, and decide which buttons should appear in the comment editor.

03d Comment Editor Options.png

The last option is “Upload Options” where you can define what kind of files are allowed to be uploaded to the blog. The ability to define accepted file extensions opens up some other possibilities, such as using the blog server’s storage as an “emergency” file storage.

03e Upload Options.png

Please remember to click the “Update Options” button after your modification to save all the changes.

Desktop Word Processor On Your Blog

Using FCKEditor plugin for WordPress is like doing blogging via a desktop word processor that you use everyday. Having the familiar look and functionalities can surely help you boost your productivity while blogging (not to mention having an alternative online word processor that you can use anytime and anywhere as long as you have access to internet).

Have you tried CKEditor? What’s your opinion about it? Do you know other alternatives? Please share using the comment below.

Spoiler Warning: 10 Spoiler Websites That Can Ruin A Movie Ending

spoiler websitesFinding out how a movie ends even before you plan your Friday night out is hardly what fun sounds like. But movie spoilers do serve a purpose.

Spoilers are anything that kills the suspense and tension of a movie climax. It could be anything from a blabbering friend who saw the movie first, or the film critic who wrote about it without a spoiler warning.

Spoilers are important sometimes because you might want to make an informed decision on the movie. For instance, I hate tear-jerkers especially the ones where the protagonist dies in the end. Forewarned with the help of a spoiler, I can save myself the cost of a ticket and popcorn.

Spoilers also help sometimes when you have missed out on some tiny detail in a movie. How many of you caught the entry of Nick Fury after the end credits of Iron Man?

So, here are ten spoiler websites that take you on the straight road through the twists and turns of a movie plot.

The Movie Spoiler

movie endings ruined

The site’s slogan is – Because it ain’t always the damn butler who did it. The website has an index of about 1,000 movies and their endings. It is one of the best spoiler websites if you are hunting for spoilers, because it does a good job of revealing all on the latest films that come to a theatre near you. Most of the movies have the plot detailed out. You can also contribute your own and have a crack at winning the reward the website promises to gift.

Moviepooper

spoiler websites

Moviepooper gives seven reasons on exactly why I am writing this post. The site is from the guy who brings us the first one. For recent spoilers, you can check out the link in the top frame which says ‘In Theaters Now’. The site originally started as a personal list of movie plots and has ended up listing 4,000+ movie endings (and counting). Most of the movie pages have a YouTube trailer and an IMDB.com link for a second look.

Movie Stinger

movie endings ruined

Movie Stinger has the look and feel of a Web 2.0 movie site. The web service is all about informing the public about extra scenes during and after the credits of films and video games. It is not exactly a spoiler website because it limits itself to a quick view of whether or not a movie has an extra scene at the tail (without spoiling the ending for them).

Browsing through Movie Stinger, you can also find out the names of songs that play during credits. The site also has a list of movies with alternate endings.

Spoiler TV

movie endings ruined

Spoiler TV is a spoiler web service that covers all the major US TV shows, and movies. Plus you can catch teaser posters and celebrity gossip on the site. The TV shows are covered by network.

There’s also a forum where you can get a heads-up on your favorite movie or TV show.

Spollywood

movie spoiler websites

Spollywood helps you to destroy a movie for friends by sharing a one line spoiler with them via Facebook. It’s just a simple fun site with about 400+ one line spoilers.

SpoilerFix

movie spoiler websites

SpoilerFix caters to a few selected TV Shows like 90210, Chuck, Bones, and Desperate Housewives. The site reveals brief plotlines for upcoming episodes of various TV series but leaves enough so that you can enjoy the twists and turns when the episode finally airs.

Ain’t It Cool News

movie spoiler websites

This is a fresh site with a nice informal take on movies, television, and comic news. You also get reviews, chats, and a forum. This is again not a specialized spoiler website, but it’s a nice place to catch reviews written in an engaging manner. The forum in fact has an official anti-spoiler policy that discourages members from revealing an awaited movie’s ending. Well, it did prevent me from taking in the premiere show of Robin Hood.

IMDB

You might visit a lot of film and movie sites, but you have to come and roost here. It’s not only a great resource for what’s been shown but also for what’s coming. Check out the Summer Movie Guide by month and genre. Future releases come with a Spoiler alert. While they won’t reveal the entire plot directly (thank God!), sometimes clues are let out. That’s why you will see a lot of Spoiler Warnings strewn about in the Plot Summary and Plot Synopsis pages.

Wikipedia

spoiler websites

Wikipedia sometimes goes into so much detail with data like Plot, Cast, Screenplay, and External References (especially this), that finding out how a movie will turn out is not a difficult hob. For serious movie buffs, Wikipedia is a treasure of trivia.

100 Movie Spoilers in 5 Minutes

If you were expecting a 10th spoiler website, here’s the spoiler – there isn’t. Instead you have this funny embed that practically kills off your entire movie watching for life in five minutes flat. Enjoy! And let us know your likes and dislikes on spoilers.

7 Ways To Use Wikipedia As A Search Tool For Movies & Movie Tidbits

wikipedia searchThe two things that make Wikipedia great can be summed up by the two words under its logo – Free Encyclopedia. The latter word stands for something that deals with the entire range of human knowledge. That for me covers movies, music, and anything that’s close to entertainment.

Wikipedia as a film guide got a brief mention in on the Internet Guide to The Movie Addict. For day to day movie information lookups, it deserves a lot more.

Do a Google search for a film and Wikipedia crops up just below IMDB.com in the top tier of results. It’s not only an encyclopedic reference point for films and movies but also a launching pad for a lot more.

If you have the patience, Wikipedia links can take you into new waters. A Wikipedia search for movies can serve as a compass for film buffs, or you can just lose yourself and discover films that you never knew before. Let’s do both and discover the ways to use Wikipedia for movies and films.

Search For A Movie

Start with a Google search for a movie. Let’s say, I want everything a search can give me for ‘The Lord of The Rings’, one of my absolute favorites. Clicking on the Wikipedia link in the search results, I land up on the Lord of The Rings page. Being a trilogy, there is one for that and then there are separate entries for the three parts.

If I really didn’t understand the film (Sean Connery didn’t understand the story and Patrick Stewart disliked the script), the Plot is a refresher. Though, if you haven’t seen the film, this section could be a spoiler.

wikipedia search

In the case of a film like LOTR and fantasy films of its ilk, you would find out where those beautiful panoramic scenes were shot. Wikipedia usually mentions the filming locations too.

If there’s a book behind the movie like there is for a lot of movies these days, you can check out sections like Comparison with the source material.

Search For The Cast & Other Movies They Have Done

Here’s where I start discovering new movies. Following the cast links, I can see their complete body of work (Filmography) and the ones that are in production. For instance, Viggo Mortensen went unnoticed in a small but powerful role in ‘Carlito’s Way’ with Al Pacino.

I might check it out at the rental store or on the net again. Similarly, you can tell from a work that the director is good or great. The links to his other works are just a click away.

Search For Soundtracks

Searching for the score that you liked? Check it under the Soundtrack heading. Some of the tracks have their own Wikipedia pages with more details.

Search For Celebrity Chit Chat

The information on Wikipedia is supported by external references and links. You can get the complete dope on those from the References and External Links sections at the end. Some of the good ones are the interview links or their personal star pages.

Search In The Categories

For all Wikipedia entries you will find the Categories under which the page is included mentioned near the foot. The ones for the films are a treasure trove for information. Here’s the Categories snapshot taken from Wikipedia’s page on ‘The Dark Knight’.

search wikipedia

For instance, clicking on American action films takes me to an alphabetical list of movies and other sub categories. The list may not be complete, but you can find a lot of good stuff there. You can keep on following the links endlesslesly.

Search Through The Lists

search wikipedia

Are you a fan of sci-fi films? Follow the list of science fiction films arranged by decade. Then there are the related lists you can jump to from their like the list of films considered to be the greatest ever. There are all sorts of lists on Wikipedia.

Search Through The Wikipedia Portal On Films

search wikipedia

Featured content on Wikipedia comes in various forms, from articles, lists, topics, and portals. Films and movies have a portal for themselves. The Wikipedia film portal is an umbrella page for articles, biographies, news, lists, and sundry other content. Some of the best showtime content on Wikipedia can be got to from here.

Then as you scroll down, you can check out the sub -portals too that are specific pages built around a topic.

wikipedia search

The above seven points are just a steering guide on how you can conduct a movie Wikipedia search. It’s a jungle of links, so the trick is to take a single thread (like the actor you are a fan of) and follow it instead of getting sidetracked by any link that comes up.

Right now I have a notepad full of film titles that I have yet to see. Make your own wishlist of films from Wikipedia and let us know how useful you find your Wikipedia search for that movie.

3 Steps To Efficiently Work With Multiple Browsers

multiple browsersEver since the legendary battle between Netscape and Internet Explorer, the browser market has shaped up to become a lot more exciting. Netscape has vanished, but its successors give Internet Explorer a run for its market share.

There is Firefox, which stepped into Netscape’s pioneer position. Opera, the fastest. Safari, the Mac browser. Flock, the social browser. And of course there is Google Chrome, the new simplicity. Among these and all the other browsers out there, which one is your favorite?

Browsers are not like antivirus programs. You don’t have to choose because they don’t interfere with each other. Rather it’s advisable to have multiple browsers installed. Some websites work properly only in one browser, you will find another browser easier to customize and work with, and a third may come in handy because it’s fast.

So how do you work efficiently with multiple browsers?

1. Sync Bookmarks

This is a basic necessity. If you really want to use various browsers, you should always have instant access to your bookmarks. One of the best tools to sync your bookmarks across multiple browsers is Transmute.

It will sync bookmarks between all major browsers, including IE, Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Safari, Avant, Flock, Konqueror, Chromium, and even social bookmarking sites like Delicious. In addition it is available for Android.

Saikat has thoroughly reviewed Transmute in this article: Migrate Bookmarks Between Your Browsers. An alternative is AM-DeadLink, which Saikat covered in this post: Clean Up Your Bookmarks by Removing Dead Links And Duplicates.

2. Open Windows Side By Side

These days mostly everyone has a widescreen monitor with a high resolution and a graphics card to support it. If you use your computer a lot and still sit in front of a 1024 x 768 pixel monitor, you should consider upgrading your hardware to work more comfortably.

If you do enjoy the comfort of a high screen resolution, you do not need to maximize your windows. This appears to be a no-brainer, but apparently not. I have found that people maximize browser windows whether or not it’s needed.

So here is a “new idea”: open two windows next to each other to make the most of your screen. It could be your default browser on the left and your fast alternative on the right or any other combination of windows.

efficiently use wide screen space

The usefulness of working with two windows side by side is also reflected in the respective Windows 7 feature called Snap. If you would like to simulate this windows behavior in Windows XP, try AeroSnap.

3. Automatically Open URLs In Secondary Browser

You may want to open certain links in a browser that is not your default. You could open that browser, use your synced bookmarks or paste the link. Tedious. You don’t have to take that detour. Instead, create a shortcut that will open the URL where you want it to open.

Right-click onto your desktop, then click > New > Shortcut and browse for the .exe file of the preferred browser. The link that appears in the shortcut field will look something like this: “C:\Programs\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe

multiple browsers

What you need to do now is enter the URL to the path, and it should look like this: “C:\Programs\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe” “http://update.microsoft.com

You can now use this shortcut to instantly open this link in a specific browser. If Firefox is your default browser, you can use an addon called Open With. It lets you open current pages in any browser of your choice.

6 Best Profiles For Listing Your Social Networks

social network profilesIf you’re reading this post it’s probably because you’re a pretty heavy internet user and you’ve realised that you’ve got a few social networking profiles up your sleeve. You might be starting to realise that having a nice-looking profile page which points your friends to your other profiles is a good idea.

But there are so many questions to answer. Which profile page do you choose? What if you use niche social networks? Should you use more than one profile page? Should you set the profile up for professional use or for friends? Where should you direct people? All of these are important questions, and they’re all best answered by looking at what’s available.

Google Profiles

Google profiles are becoming increasingly popular. They’re easy to set up, because Google will suggest links it already thinks are associated with you. Besides being a little creepy, this feature does help to make things quick to set up. Google profiles are also linked to Google Buzz, so make sure you check all your privacy settings there if you set this up.

Hint: For professional profiles, ensure you set up a Flickr set just for professional-friendly photos and link to that from your professional profile. Much as your kid’s birthday party pictures are cute, it’s probably worth keeping them separate from your business networking. If need be, read more on maintaining a professional profile.

Claim.ID

This is a great way to keep track of everything. Load in all your important profiles, blogs and other related links, then categorise and explain them for your visitors. ClaimID lets you declare whether the link points to something “About you” or “By you” amongst other things. This way, you can showcase your own websites, plus any glowing reviews you’ve had from other people.

It’s an easy way to create an online resume of sorts. ClaimID also lets you use widgets in the sidebar, so you can link to other networks there and add a little colour.

DandyID

manage social networking accountsThis service is really easy to use, because it shows you the profile URLs and lets you fill in your username, ID number or whatever. It then really quickly checks to see if that profile URL worked or if you’ve made a typo.

There’s a lot of networks on the list, so most social networks will be found there. It falls down when it comes to niche networks though, because there’s no way of adding something not on the list. There’s also no way of adding multiple IDs for any network, so if you have more than one Tumblr or Twitter profile, you have to choose just one to display.

Card.ly

Cardly is fantastic for many reasons. Firstly, it allows you to choose from a good number of social networks. Secondly, it limits you to choosing just eight of them for your profile, preventing you from going overboard. Don’t worry, there’s another slot for a website, so you can point them somewhere else for more information. Thirdly, it has many great skins to choose from.

The overall effect of this combination is to build a stylish landing page which won’t overwhelm the reader.

social network profiles

Retaggr

Retaggr let you plug in your networks and create a nice-looking business card widget for you. It’s basically designed for you to have a virtual business card for social networks. The free version of Retaggr is limited, but not so much that a normal user will have any problems.

A person with many blogs might run out of free website slots, but that’s about it. Besides which, Retaggr are offering free upgrades at the moment and they promise the paid version is pretty cheap anyway.

Gravatar

If you write or comment on wordpress.com blogs, a Gravatar account is almost essential. Gravatar’s main purpose is to make life easy for you by linking a profile photo with an email address. This way, when you comment on blogs, your picture shows up automatically.

But then Gravatar went a step further and allowed you to list verified social network profiles. These are really simple to set up – all you do is click on the service and it takes you to the authentication page on that social network.

Other Possibilities

An honourable mention needs to go to Friendfeed. It’s really a lifestream, rather than a profile page, but it does allow you to create a neat badge which does everything a profile page should do – it points your friends on to your other profiles.

Another site with potential, which didn’t quite make the list is isalso.at. This is a great concept, but sadly at this stage it’s limited to just a small handful of networks. I’m not convinced anyone will be happy with such a small choice.

Other social network profile pages previously covered at MakeUseOf include:

My Recommendations

Because it’s so easy to set up a Google profile and a Gravatar, these would be the first I would recommend you create. I’d also suggest using different profiles for personal and professional use (with sensible email addresses linked), using your real name for the professional profile. Yes really do this – if someone Googles your real name, which profile would you prefer they find?

Card.ly or Retaggr would be my next suggestion, since they’re both such simple, uncluttered landing pages. If you still have a bit of time up your sleeve, get to work on a holistic profile at DandyID or ClaimID.

With this much information on how easy it is to set up a great profile to link your social networks, you may as well get one set up right now. Which one will you set up first? Why?

3 Not-So-Obvious But Totally Awesome Uses Of Xenu Link Sleuth For Webmasters

xenu link sleuthXenu Link Sleuth (TM) (Windows-only) is one of the best-known webmaster tools. It helps find broken links throughout your site to fix the errors and offers your users a better experience. On top of all, it is free (and can be used for large websites like MUO as well).

That being said, the most obvious application of Xenu Link Sleuth is to use it to find broken links. You are equipped with various tools such as excluding some folders, restricting it to internal folders only and setting the number of retries for failed links, etc.

It’s been described a lot, you can for example read the official FAQ to get an idea.

What I am going to talk about here are 3 other, less obvious ways to take advantage of the tool.

1. Find Huge Images & Files

While making your pages easier to remember, images affect your load time and hence user experience. Therefore finding your largest images and optimizing them is one of the first things to do if you are going to improve your site’s usability and rankings.

To locate the largest images, run the general crawl for your site and then sort the table by “SIZE” column. This will bring up the largest files linked from your site pages:

Filter by size

Tip: if you right-click on any line, you will be able to access “Properties” to see which page exactly (hot)links to a file or an image:

2. Generate A List Of Valid Links

After Xenu finishes crawling a site, it generates a report that contains the list of valid URLs:

  • The list of plain URLs;
  • The list of linked titles reflecting the site structure:

List of valid URLs

Tip: If you want to only crawl internal pages (and have them in your HTML map), uncheck “Check External Links” when adding your URL to crawl:

Check Internal URLs only

3. Find The Deepest-Buried Pages

If you run a huge (possibly dynamic or database-driven) website, it is so easy to lose track of some of your pages. Some of them are gold, yet they are buried so deep in your site structure that no one will ever discover them.

Want to unveil the potential of those lost pages? Then sort your site crawl results by “Level” column to find those pages:

xenu link sleuth

Tip: If you can’t access the page but you want to know how valuable the content there is, right-click on an URL to get instant access to Google Cache and Internet Archive;

Bonus: Quick Tips

Some essential tips every Xenu user should now:

  • To save the whole table to Excel, export it to TAB separated file (located in FILE menu);
  • If you see too many pages failed or timed-out, decrease the number of parallel threads (Navigate Options -> Preferences) – the tool will work slower but will have fewer errors.
  • Retry broken link using the FILE menu (or CTRL+R shortcut);
  • Don’t forget to save the Xenu file to be able to get back to it any time to re-crawl or re-try broken links;
  • Find redirected pages (keep “Treat redirections as errors” in the crawl preferences:

Xenu settings

Do you use the Xenu Link Sleuth for anything else besides finding broken links? Share your tips!
