Faking It With Style – Enhancing Your Images With TiltShiftMaker

enhancing imagesThe idea behind tilt-shift is to make your photographs of real life-sized objects look like photographs of models.

No, not supermodels. That’s a whole different subject. TitlShiftmaker makes this easy, and the results are great.

You can buy lenses for big cameras that do this stuff properly, but most of us will never find the money, justify the expense, or learn to operate the equipment. Get your tilt-shift fix here instead.

Where does this fit?

We’ve covered many image enhancement options before, from the simple to the ludicrously complex. This is a simple site with a simple aim, and it doesn’t claim to replace either real tilt-shift lenses or the customisable effects from packages like Photoshop. But enhancing images with it is easy, quick, fun, and the results look very cool.

So if you want to have some fun with your existing images and see what you can do, here it is.

Getting your images into TiltShiftMaker

The front page of the site provides everything you need. You can upload images from your local computer, or from the web. Local files work just the way you might expect.

enhance images

Browse to the image you want to play with, and hit the upload button.

Take note of the maximums. No more than 6000 pixels on the long side, and no more than 8MB in size. And if you happen to be working with RAW files, remember to convert to JPG first.

enhance images

Web uploads are just as easy. Browse to an image, click the button. Now let’s do something with it.

Making changes

We need an example, so let’s start with a default conversion from this:

enhance images

TiltShiftMaker presents you with a set of options. By default, it’s going to come out like this, but let’s work through the settings:

enhance images online

enhance images online

A real tilt-shift lens is moved out of line with the normal path of the light through the camera, and as a result tends to end up with a very small depth of field (the part of the photo that is in focus). Adjusting the focus on the lens moves that band back and forth, and lets you choose the small part of the image that is sharply in focus.

enhancing images

On the website, moving the slider up and down has the same effect, and allows us to get the child in focus, while blurring the rest of the image. You can adjust the effect further with the Focus size slider, making the band as narrow as makes sense to you.

Hit the Preview button to get an idea of what you might be doing.

The last option in this section, Enhance colors, is an example of something that improves on the real world capability. You’d struggle to do this with an actual lens. Go for it. I won’t tell.

enhance images online

Now that you’re experienced…

There are some advanced settings you can use to make your image pop.

The first setting, Defocus strength, determines how much the blurry part of the image is blurred. For some images, it doesn’t take much.

Defocus gradient sets the rate with which you slide from in to out of focus.

The last option, Enhance bokeh, might just require some explanation. Bokeh is a Japanese term relating to the way in which the out of focus background is blurred. This all gets deep really fast, but the short version is that the shapes that the background is made up of depends on the construction of the adjustable aperture on the lens. See what I mean?

In any case, the slider performs some magic in the background to make the bokeh look better. Your mileage will decidedly depend.

And from here?

Once you have the image you want, you can click on the Get full size button to save a copy locally, and then you can upload it to your favourite web location.

There are some places you might like to take a look at, to see what people have been doing. People who are a whole lot better at this than me. Firstly, check the gallery at the site. Then move on over to flickr, and finally take a look in the group at Photobucket.

enhancing images

We’ve covered a number of other photo-enhancement options in the past. You might also like to take a look at these.

A similar capability is available at TiltShift Generator. You can rescue some of your images at FocusMagic, and remove red eye here. Varun talked about a stack of enhancement sites in this list, and if you have any interest in digital photography whatsoever, you really need to take a look at Bakari’s stunning new PDF guide. Something to download and read thoroughly.

That’s it. I’d love to know how you go, any other techniques you find useful, and perhaps some links to your results. Let me know in the comments.

Radian: An Awesome Mouse-Oriented Application Launcher [Windows]

application launcherApplication launchers are very useful and can save you a lot of time. In their most basic form, they provide you access to your frequently used files and programs. The more advanced launchers support running of different scripts on your computer to automate tasks.

MakeUseOf has covered application launchers in the past. However, more often than not, an application launcher can be heavy on system resources. They have been known to prolong system startups. Radian is another application launcher for Windows, which has a surprisingly tiny footprint.

At 636KB (installation), it barely leaves a mark on your hard disk. The program itself is more mouse-oriented, so keyboard lovers would be a bit disappointed. Let me take you through the various options provided by Radian. You will need to start by downloading it from here.

Setting It Up

At first run, you will need to hold down your right mouse button to take Radian into the design mode. Radian basically resembles a circle divided into four sectors. Each of these sectors can hold up to 6 shortcuts, thereby giving you a choice of 24 launchers. Each of these 24 options can be customized completely to launch only what you want to use.

In the design mode, 4 buttons are provided, which resemble 4 gears. Each of these can be used to access the settings of each quadrant (such as background color, etc.).

application launcher

Let’s now add a shortcut to Radian. Once you’re in the design mode, click any of the buttons to customize it. This will bring up a small box with two fields. The first one, called “Title” is for you to give a caption to the button. The second one is to enter a path to what you want to launch. Use these boxes to input the settings for the button you just selected. Once done, either hit “Test” to try it out, or click “OK” when you are satisfied. In my example, I’ve set it to launch an image file. You can set yours to anything you like (an app shortcut, a file, a folder, etc.). Repeat this step for all the shortcuts that you want to use.

freeware application launcher

You can set each quadrant to display links from a particular folder as well. For example, the bottom quadrant, in its default settings shows the “Desktop”, and the top quadrant shows links from “Quick Launch”. You can customize what each quadrant shows by clicking on the gear icon for a particular quadrant and and specifying the “Mode” for the same.

freeware application launcher

Using Radian

Now that the hard work is over, we can get down to using this nifty app launcher. Start by holding down your right-mouse button. Now, without releasing the button, move the mouse to any one of the four quadrants of the circle. This will cause the items of that quadrant to pop out. Thereafter, select the item you want and let go of the button to launch the app. Screenshots follow below.

Given enough time, you will find that an application launcher is something that is indispensable for a computer user. Once you are hooked to the convenience of a launcher, you will hate reverting to a situation without a launcher. If you are a keyboard ninja, you should give EnsoLauncher a shot. In case you use any other launcher, do let us know in the comments.

Portable Linux Apps Which Work With Any Linux Distro

portable linux appsPortable Apps for Windows and Mac have been around for a long time, but are less common in the Linux world. Due to the complexity of Linux dependencies, and the different way different distributions locate these dependencies, the portable Linux application long seemed like a pipe dream.

Until now.

New website PortableLinuxApps features a number of portable Linux applications, which will work on any Linux distribution. These can run off your flash drive or from a folder in your home directory; it doesn’t matter. Best of all, there’s documentation out there to help you make your own program, should you not be able to find what you’re looking for.

How It Works

Like portable applications for other operating systems, portable Linux apps bundle each and every dependency a program has within a single executable. This has downsides: applications with redundent dependencies will take up more hard drive space, for example. For many the convinence of portable applications outweight this negative, particularly in our present age of cheap hard drives.

Because every dependency of each program is bundled in the program itself, these portable Linux apps can run on practically any Linux distro (although I’m certain someone in the comments will manage to prove this wrong). Ubuntu, Fedora and SuSe are all confirmed to work with these apps, which is a solid start.

Just remember: once you download such an app, remember that you’ll need to change the permission to allow executing the file as a program. If you’re not sure how to do this the simplest way is to right-click the file, then click “Properties” followed by the “Permissions” tab. You’ll find the option to allow execution at the bottom of the window:

portable linux

One Online Collection

It would seem that, for now, PortableLinuxApps.org is the place to find…well…portable Linux apps.

portable linux apps

The collection currently is quite small but features many MakeUseOf favourites, including:

  • DosBox, a DOS emulator for playing old games.
  • Handbrake, the best way to convert video.
  • Transmission, the light BitTorrent program.
  • Pidgin, the universal IM program.

Just download the software, set the permissions and you’re good to go!

Rolling Your Own

Can’t find a particular program you’re looking for? You can bundle it yourself! The process is relatively easy, if not a little convoluted. The good folks at OMG Ubuntu recently wrote a post explaining how to convert an Ubuntu .deb file into a portable app, so check that out for more information.

Here’s hoping that in the future creating a portable app from a .deb file will be a two-click affair!

Conclusion

portable linux apps

Package management is perhaps what makes Linux great, but it’s also one of the most common complaints newcomers to Linux have. Being used to simply Googling and downloading any program needed, the average new users are a little confused by what they find: .tar.gz files or worse.

This is made worse by the sheer number of different Linux distros on the market, and the fact that they all have different ways of managing packages. The best thing to do, of course, is to learn to use your distro’s package manager. But portable apps are cool, and certainly have their place.

Can you think of cool uses for such technology? Have any apps you’ve bundled yourself that you’d like to share? Let us know in the comments below!

Try Out Google’s Chromium OS On Your Laptop Or Netbook With Flow

google chromium osChromium OS (or Chrome OS) is a new breed of open-source operating system, and like much of Google’s product suite is completely free of charge. The Google Chromium OS relies on the web for all but the bare-bones, and aims to bring the whole internet to your fingertips within seconds of turning on your PC.

The only problem is that Google’s official builds suffer from poor hardware support, driver issues and are unlikely to work unless you’re using a brand new netbook. Enter Flow, an exciting Chromium OS build with much improved compatibility allowing you to sample your first taste of a lightning-fast web-reliant operating system, all from the comfort of a 2GB USB flash drive.

Mimicking Google’s popular Chrome web browser, the Google Chromium OS contains no applications or programs and instead uses web-based services such as Google Documents and Picnik. This is all part of Google’s plan to essentially turn their web browser into an operating system, and by doing so they’ve managed to drastically speed up the whole process of “getting online”.

Flow is a third-party build by an enthusiast called Hexxeh that provides a straight-forward means of test driving this new platform. I will be using Windows to create the bootable USB image, although once you have created your bootable Chromium OS build it will work in any other compatible system. Linux users may want to look here, and for the trickier Mac install there’s a handy YouTube video with full walkthrough.

Before starting it’s best to check whether your particular netbook, laptop or desktop is listed as a known compatible device. If you’re not listed, then you’ll probably want to try it anyway. If it works, you might want to let the author know!

Installing Chromium OS To USB

The first thing you’ll need to do is grab a copy of the USB image from Hexxeh’s main page. You can download directly from the server, or via a torrent link if you’d like to help seed and share the project afterwards. You’ll need a BitTorrent client if you’d like to be a good citizen.

google chromium os

Once downloaded, extract the CD image file (.img) from the archive. If you’re stuck, you can use 7Zip for this. Lastly, download a copy of Image Writer for Windows as you’ll need this to transfer the image file you just downloaded to your spare (2GB or larger) USB stick. Extract all the files within the Image Writer archive to their own directory, and run Win32DiskImager.exe.

Note that you may need administrator permission to write the image to USB, so ensure you are logged into Windows with full privileges.

Within the Win32 Disk Imager window navigate your way to the Chromium OS CD image (.img) file and select it. Select the USB drive you wish to use by choosing its corresponding letter within the drop down box. When you’re ready, hit Write. You’ll be warned that you are about to potentially corrupt your USB drive, click Yes and proceed.

google chromium

Once the progress bar reaches its destination – you’re done.

Booting

Restart your PC and enter your BIOS setup. Depending on your PC, this will entail hitting something like the Del or F2 key as your PC first boots. Within these settings you’ll need to schedule your PC to boot from USB before it tries to launch your primary OS within your boot devices. Save your changes and restart your computer, making sure that all-important USB stick is inserted.

If you have problems booting from USB, or your computer does not support it then you can try PLoP Boot Manager. This program allows you to burn a CD image or write a floppy that will load an interface from which to launch the USB drive.

google chromium

Once Chromium OS has loaded (don’t worry, your first boot might take a while) you can log in with your Google account. If you have trouble logging in, the default Flow username is facepunch and the password is the same. This will allow you to log in and play around, even if you have network troubles.

google chromium os

If you’re familiar with a web browser you’ll instantly be able to use Chromium, so it makes for a nice lightweight OS. It’s by no means perfect yet, but it’s handy if you “just need the web”.

Have you experimented with Google Chromium OS? Does Flow work on your PC? Let us know in the comments.

Pump: Awesome All-In-One Video Manager & More

video managerIn this era of highly competitive markets, we can spot two general trends among software makers to stay afloat in the sea of similar applications; focusing on only one feature and polishing it well, or throwing in as many features as they can.

The latter option is true of multimedia managers. Most of them can handle all kinds of formats and also comes with a bunch of extra bells and whistles. But even among those all-in-one multimedia suites, the Pump video manager still stands out.

A Video Manager & More

What is Pump? At its very core, it is a Windows-based video manager, an application to manage everything related to video collections, starting from playing, managing, converting, to searching and downloading. It can even subscribe to RSS feeds and download torrents.

If you’d like to try, you can download and install the app. After the installation process is done, you will be greeted with the “First Launch Assistant” which will help you set the application to fit your needs.

video manager

Using this assistant you can import your multimedia collections (audio and video) including the ones from your iTunes Library. You can also install additional components needed to play and convert multimedia files. In my installation, since I already had VLC and Quicktime components, I only had to install the Lame component to be able to convert CDs into MP3s.

video manager software

Pump will also modify your firewall settings. Since most Pump features depend on an internet connection, it’s important that Pump has access to the net.

video manager software

The Pump main window is divided into two main parts. On the left are the menus. You can access all of Pump’s activities from this pane, including torrent activities and available external drives.

video manager software

On the right is the main pane where you can monitor individual activities. If you open audio/video files, you can control the playback from there. This main window is also a web browser. So you can enter an URL and browse away directly from Pump.

free video manager

To play an imported video, for example, all you have to do is to click on the Videos option from the left pane and choose the video from the main window.

free video manager

Pump comes with pre-configured RSS feed subscriptions of Rocket Boom and Mininova. But you can easily add your own RSS feeds by clicking on the plus button and type (or paste) the link.

free video manager

It’s been mentioned before that Pump is also a torrent client. If you want to download a torrent, you have to add the torrent from the “File – Import torrents” menu. I’ve tried the feature, and even though it’s not as polished as a veteran torrent client like uTorrent, Pump is good enough.

02e_Import_Torrents.png

If you like video sites like YouTube, you can browse the site directly from the Pump window. And it’s as fully featured as any ordinary browser.

03_Add_To_queue.png

And if there’s a video that you like, you can download it directly using “Download the flash video” link that will appears at the top of the webpage. Please note that this link is not always available.

03b_Download_YouTube.png

A friendly copyright warning will appear before you can download the video. If you want to always be reminded, check the “Show this message again next time” box. Otherwise, the message will appear only once.

03c_Download_Warning.png

Then all you have to do is wait until the video download is finished. Meanwhile, you can continue browsing to find and watch other videos.

video manager

If you have a list of videos that you want to watch, you can do the video search and download the results directly from Pump.

Video_Search.png

Despite some glitches that you can expect from beta stage applications (the current release of Pump at the time of writing is v.0.8), Pump has the potential to be a complete and solid all-in-one multimedia manager.

Have you tried Pump? Or do you have your own favorite multimedia manager? Please share your thoughts and opinions using the comments below.

How To Create 5 Smart iTunes Playlists For iPad, iPhone & iPod

how to create itunes playlistsIf you’re a music junkie, your iTunes collection probably contains several thousand songs, taking up over 30 gigabytes of memory on your computer. However, when it comes to your iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch, you may not able to sync your entire iTunes library to your mobile device(s).

But you can create what are called Smart Playlists to keep your mobile device fresh with your favorite and new songs. Smart Playlists will automatically change and update the songs on your mobile device each time you sync it to iTunes on your computer.

Basically, Smart Playlists consists of a list of items (songs, podcasts, movies)  based on rules you set for the smart list. Here’s how to create Smart iTunes playlists:

  • Open iTunes on your computer. Select File —>New Smart Playlist.

how to create itunes playlists

  • In the resulting dialogue box, you are presented with sets of rules or parameters to base your list on. We’re going to start with a simple one.
  • When you click on the first pull-down menu, you get a long list of items to begin your rule. Move your mouse down and select Rating.

itunes playlists

  • Now select the middle pull-down menu and select “is.”

itunes playlists

  • Select the third pull-down menu and move your mouse over the stars, selecting all five of them.

itunes playlists

  • In the rules below, select “Limit to 25“ items, or MB or minutes. Basically, you’re setting up a rule for how you want to limit your smart list. If this list is for your mobile device, you might limit it to a certain number of megabytes to ensure the smart list only takes up a limited amount of space on your device.

limito.png

  • The last few options you have for setting up rules deals how you want songs selected, e.g. selected by random, artist, highest rating. For our first Smart Playlist, simply select “random.”

selectedby2.png

  • Lastly, make sure the Live updating button is clicked. This won’t affect this particular smart list, but it will make a difference in others. You might also check “Match only checked items,” to ensure that the smart list does not play songs that you don’t want automatically played.

favoriteslist.png

  • Now we have a playlist that consist of 25, five-star rated, random songs.

25favoriteslist.png

Now that you know how to create a Smart Playlist, the following are four others you might find useful for using your mobile device. Customize them to fit your needs.

Recently Added

Say you download music on a regular basis to your iTunes library. This Smart Playlist will collect recently added songs in a given time period. With “Live updating” selected, this list will refresh and update when new songs are added. Notice also that the rule excludes podcasts. You can add additional rules to exclude other types of media.

recentlyadded.png

To add additional rules, simply click the first + button and set up the rule. Also change the rule “Match any/all of the following rules.” In this case select “all”, which means all the conditions must be met.

Favorite Genre

This list is based on a favorite genre of music.

Lost Favorites

This list collects songs that you like but have not played in a specified period of time. The smart list is dependent on how well you have rated your song collection. So if you haven’t done much rating, get busy. You can even make a smart list that collects un-rated songs.

Zune 4.0 – A Stunning Media Management Application

zune playerAfter buying the Zune HD music/video player from Microsoft, I was re-introduced to the Windows Zune Player software. It has undergone a big overhaul since we last reviewed it. One thing remains the same though – it’s still an incredible media management application.

You don’t need the Zune player to enjoy the benefits of the PC software. Below, we’ll discuss some of its more prominent features, and give you another couple of reasons to diss iTunes.

Zune Is…

Zune is the name of Microsoft’s music technologies – recently diverging into the fields of other popular media as well, like online video. It started with the launch of ‘the Zune’, Microsoft’s iPod rival that suffered from an undeserved marketing failure. But now, Zune is present on a multitude of different systems, ranging from the Zune HD and mobile phones to your Xbox 360.

microsoft zune hd

The Zune player is also available for your Windows PC but as of yet, Mac OS X and Linux are left out. Microsoft’s iTunes counterpart, this application manages your Zune device, as well as your local music libraries. MakeUseOf covered Zune 3.0, the old version, with a laudatory review. Much has changed since, with the big upgrade to Zune 4.0.

Zune 4.0 Media Manager

The 4.0 version launched in September last year, together with the Zune HD device. It got a complete interface and design overhaul – although touches of its predecessor are left present. Once again, you can expect a visually stunning and innovative interface, even if it’s still much of a memory hogging application.

zune player

It also integrates better with your other devices, such as the Xbox 360. Notable is the newfound importance of the cloud. Especially in the United States, the Marketplace – where you can buy music and video – is not to be missed. The new ‘Social’ tab allows you to interact with other audiophiles, and accentuate your musical identity; it’s Zune’s new social network for music fans.

microsoft zune hd

The music player itself highly resembles its predecessor. The beauty of it relights the hunger for innovation in our hearts – and perhaps confirms that it’s time to move to a new standard interface for media players.

Zune comes packed with a number of interesting features for the everyday music lover. There is Mixview, which shows a composition of connections to other artists and albums. Smart DJ puts this to use, by generating playlists of songs that are somehow related to a single artist, album, or song. The web streamer allows you to play your music on any device with an internet browser; even the Zune-ignored Mac and Linux systems.

Premium: Marketplace & Zune Pass

By all means, the Zune is a free music player. But the Marketplace and Zune Pass are two optional premium features that might enrich that experience. Sadly, these are only available for users in the United States and Puerto Rico.

The marketplace requires little to no explanation. It’s a place where you can buy the latest music and video. You’ll also find music videos, top 100 lists, channels and playlists.

microsoft zune hd

More interesting is the Zune Pass – directly related to the Zune Marketplace. For a monthly subscription fee of $14.99, you can download as many songs as you want – plus 10 songs ‘to keep’, each month. The Zune Pass was already available before the 4.0 update, but hasn’t lost its appeal.

If You Can’t Download The Application…

This link should take you to a page where you can download the Zune media manager. However, you might be redirected to a website of your own locale. Not all of these websites offer this download.

zune player

If you encounter this problem, scroll down to the bottom of the page and find the current region/language. Click International, and select United States on the next page. You should be able to find the download there, for sure. Note that although not all countries can access the market place, they can use the software as a regular media management application.
