4 Other Virtual Pet Sites for Your Kids Like Neopets

virtual pet sites like neopetsTo anyone who has witnessed the Neopets phenomenon, which launched in 1999 and resulted in a line of toys and cards, distributed by Viacom to several real stores across the country; it is no surprise to hear that kids have an insatiable appetite for virtual pets.

It doesn’t seem to matter that the cute little creatures only exist in “pixieland”, they still want to feed them, buy them, clothes and play with them. So why not make the little ones happy by introducing them to other virtual pet sites like Neopets? It might be all you need to get a few moments of peace and quiet during the summer vacation.

Marapets

Marapets has been designed to work with several age groups. Its target audience goes from the very young to the preteen groups. If your kid has played Neopets, a lot about Marapets will seem very familiar.

The selection of pets isn’t quite as attractive as Neopets’ but there is still enough variety to keep most kids happy. Though the site is free, like several other sites nowadays, it has upgrade options, all of which require real money. Some of the most desired ones involve upgrading your pets to special edition pets, special items and costumes.

One major difference between Marapets and Neopets, is that they cater to a pop-culture-savvy audience, with dress up games that give you options to dress your doll like pop culture icons such as Lady Gaga, Usher, Pink and Zac Efron.

Subeta

Subeta targets an older audience, since you must be at least 13 years old to create a character. Though many of the pet features are very similar to Neopets, there is certainly an edgier style to the site, which feels less like a site for little kids and more like a site for pre-teens. To appeal to that age group, they made a few choices to differentiate themselves from the sites for younger kids. Some of those choices had mixed results.

For example, they named the groups of similar interests “Cults” and created journals that users can update with their thoughts, but that never seem to be updated with more than a few words. The design of the features is certainly well done, and the imagery of a lot of the features is interesting and original, even if the actual features on the virtual pet site are still so much like Neopets. Subeta is a good option for those who still want to play with virtual pets, but who want to feel like they are on a site with people from their same age group.

Build-A-Bear-Ville

Build-A-Bear-Ville is certainly built with a younger audience in mind, starting from its character creation which has a character guiding you all along the way. One of the first steps on the creation asks you for “your parents email address” so they can let them know you are a member of Build-A-Bear-Ville.

It is refreshing that they have golden rules you must accept stating that you must be kind and never give out personal information. The site itself is not quite as interactive as Neopets, and with long loading times between activities. Some of the games are also more repetitive than you would find in other sites, but it seems appropriate and welcoming to a very young audience. Note that some of the features are only available for those who have purchased a bear at Build-A-Bear-Ville stores.

Powerpets

virtual pet sites

Powerpets is one of the most obviously Neopets-inspired sites with a lot about it looking like a direct copy of Neopets. The good news is that if you like Neopets, you are bound to like Powerpets too. They have added a few features that make this site an interesting alternative to Neopets though, one being the ability to add pictures of your real pets to the “Pet Zone” part of the site. Some of the stock market and bank loan aspects of the site can potentially teach kids some real money skills.

So pick one of the sites above and explore them with your kids. It’s a great way to spend some time together, even when on the computer, and to introduce them to sites they can share with their friends. Know of other virtual pet sites like Neopets? What sites are your kids into? Tell us about them.

Design The MakeUseOf T-Shirt & Get $200!

One of our pet projects over the past year has been to launch our own line of customised t-shirts, and we have now finally decided to get this baby moving.  But we thought it would be cooler if we asked YOU to help us with the design.

Instead of us just slapping the MakeUseOf logo onto a white t-shirt, we thought we would ask all you budding designers out there to design a shirt for us. Something cool looking that people (techies) would WANT to wear. Think along the lines of geeks, computers, software and Make Use Of. The MakeUseOf.com text should be placed somewhere on the t-shirt as well, but doesn’t have to be the main element.

For instance, check out the T-shirt done for our friends at GeeksAreSexy.net.

MUO Tshirt

If you would like to design something for us, we would need it by April 30th 2010. We will choose the top 3 designs which will make its way onto our shirts. The three winners will get $200 each (payable via Paypal), bragging rights and a free T-shirt with their design on it.

But before you get your crayons and hand paint out, there’s a few rules to this competition :

  • T-shirt artwork needs to be high-resolution or vector. Photoshop rasterized images should be at least 300DPI, vector images can be any size as they are easy to scale. T-shirt designs should be 7 colors or less.
  • The recommended formats for the design are TIFF, JPG, PSD, PDF, AI and EPS (other file formats will not be considered).
  • All designs should be sent to mark[at]makeuseof[dot]com. Do not send them to another MakeUseOf employee.
  • Do not submit anything containing legally copyrighted images. If you use one of your own images, we may ask you to prove ownership.
  • If your design is chosen, MakeUseOf will assume the legal copyright of that design and will do with it what we please. We would ask you to sign a contract, transferring the legal copyright of the design over to us in perpetuity.
  • While making your design, what would increase your chances of winning would be if you could also make a smaller version of the design which could easily fit onto a mug or a mousepad if we ever decided to head in that direction in the future.

So – if you would like your work to be immortalized on our T-shirts, start designing! We are looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

4 Really Funny YouTube Channels Worth Keeping Up With

funny-youtube-channelsYouTube is an interesting place. You can find almost anything there. I even find music I love there and it works kind of like my personal jukebox allowing me to make my own playlists.

YouTube also has what they call channels. Any user can start their own channel, recording and uploading videos for others to follow.  As you can guess, some channels are more interesting than others. Some are less offensive than others.  Some are even educational. Then there are those channels that people use just to vent.

You can also find a lot of funny Youtube videos. I would like to share 4 funny YouTube channels that are hilarious and actually worth checking out.  So sit back and have a laugh.

ImprovEverywhere

This channel is hilarious! The whole premise that they go by is “we cause scenes”.  Kind of a play on words but what they actually do is choose a public place and actually make a scene using improvisation. The public has no idea what is taking place (except a few) so they’re really taken aback by what’s going on.  For example, one of my favorites is the “I Love Lunch” musical:

Check out some more of my favorite funny Youtube videos: Grocery Store Musical, Best Buy and Slo-Mo Home Depot

PennyPranks

Have you ever had to count pennies in order to get something in a pinch?  This is a YouTube channel where a man and a boy attempt to purchase large ticket items with nothing but pennies. As it turns out, some salesmen accept the payment but others do not.  As it also turns out, the video series was created as an advertisement for an office store sale – school supplies for a penny. Here’s the guitar video:

Jack Vale Films

This guy is crazy!  What he does is he sets up hidden cameras and randomly pranks people.  It’s neat seeing someone who can take people’s attention off whatever is going on in their lives and have a laugh.  Watch over and over as people are taken off guard by his shenanigans.  Warning, some of the videos will need you to appreciate fart humor (farting turkey, farting in NY, farting in an elevator).  Don’t worry, that’s not all he does.  He also has the unique ability to play peek-a-boo with total strangers in these funny Youtube videos:

PetTubedotcom

Who doesn’t love those funny pet videos?  Well, YouTube is not totally devoid of funny pet video channels. PetTubedotcom happens to be one of them!  I’m sure you’d get a kick out of baby raccoons chasing little kids around their back yard or cats getting into personal battles with sneakers, If so, PetTubedotcom could be the YouTube channel for you. For example, check out this video of three dogs teaming up on a tether ball:

See, I told you there are some funny channels on YouTube. I understand that everyone’s sense of humor is different. Perhaps some people do not find the same channels funny as I do.

Tell me, which YouTube channels do you find funny? Also, if you have some favorite funny YouTube channels that make you laugh, let me know in the comments.
